Found this about 6 inches deep at the same elementary school playground I've been digging the last week. Its pretty large and heavy for its size. I know it's a worthless piece of crud, but I'm stumped as to what it is. (Shot Peace Dollar is a pocket piece)

The only letters I can find on it are barely legible and read "DSCA 16" and below that is "0395"
Some of this might be a little off because it is really hard to read, but it's just some part identification anyways.
Lafayette Grading Set
But I'm clueless on this one.
Maybe a cover plate for an old thermometer?
Or a security chain thing....Just guessing.
Cool butterfly. Gold, silver or costume?
Im in Las Cruces, New Mexico so right now is the perfect time for me to be out detecting. When I was digging this stuff I was really kicking myself for not wearing a short sleeved shirt. Im enjoying it now while I can though... summertime means only night hunts for me here.
As for local history... there isnt very much as compared to the east coast
Actually, there are a couple of forts that were occupied during the civil war but they are all preserved and historical sites now. If you go looking, sometimes you can find old homesites up in the mountains but it requires a lot of motivation and hiking.
I dont know what the butterfly is, I have no waying of testing the material... but I'd guess cheap costume judging by where I found it. I'll have my day soon...
