Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself

Hello to all,
I came across the CU forum after much searching and was so impressed by the knowledge base you guy's all have that I wanted to get involved. Though I am not new to collecting, I am nowhere near the level of expertise that you are all at, but I just need some honest and easy help from people who REALLY care about cards. I am beginning to move in the direction of getting some cards professionally graded, trying to access my cards condition/grading better beforehand, and generally trying to understand things a little better. Some of the questions I may post in the future may seem a little simple or ridiculous to you but I hope you will bear with me and remember what it was like when you were first starting out. Cards have come a long way since I used to stick Mantles' and Mays' in the spokes of my Schwinn Sting Ray (Yeah...I know), and I'm just trying to grasp some new things here.
So with all that being said I'd just like to thank you in advance for your patience in dealing with a"newbie" to CU, and I truly respect the hell out of you all from what I've read.
Thanks
NT

Congrats on graduating from being a mere hobbyist to becoming a demented, compulsive collector.

Be good my brothers.
This grading stuff can be addictive. Beware of guys trying to get you to collect certain sets. They only want to use you so you grade more cards and have more of that set to chose from. They did it to me on the 84 Donruss set.
Seriously..Welcome. There is a huge amount of knowledge here and they have not tossed me off the boards for asking dumb questions......yet
Welcome.

<< <i>Welcome aboard! Why is it everyone put Mantle and Mays in their spokes? Couldn't they have grabbed Don Wilson or Matty Alou? >>
I think that due to their power and batting averages they just had a louder sound....right?....(nope, I'm still pissed that I used them)

Well I want to begin getting my cards professionally graded (the higher value cards first), then work my way down the list. My collection of 300- 400 cards is "ungraded" and spans quite a few years. Most of them are in really great shape as I was very particular and picky in my buying. Of course 60 - 100 of these are what I'd consider my "better" cards, but what I get graded will depend on whether it's worth it or not. I collect for two reasons....My LOVE of baseball, and any possible long term investment on some "better cards" I might have. I'm not talking the "huge" money here, but just the nice kind where you've gotten a card low and just hang on to it and it turns around for you. I dont really collect "sets" of cards as my finances and patience are too limited, I also only collect up to about 1990. After that cards just diversified WAY too much fro me. All the subsets of subsets of subsets of subsets drove me crazy so I just stuck to what I knew. Bottom line is that I just freakin love my cards, (probably 1964-1969 Topps the best).

Must have put cards in my spokes at some time.
Does anyone remember how we attached them ?
Had duct tape been invented yet ...

For the youngsters, a clothespin was a device that was used to hang clothes out on a clothesline,
which was an an ancient method that cave people used to dry their clothes before clothes dryers were invented.
