Box Taler question for the forum

I was surfing websites, and ran into a picture of a 17th century austrian "box taler". Does anybody have any information about box talers?

Interesting. I have seen Morgan dollars used for the same purposes, but I did not make the connection.

I guess those double talers would have packed a real punch.
