Just opened a couple packs - what grades? - Update with grades

I need to go out and buy a lottery ticket tonight. I opened one wax pack of 1978 OPC and got a nice Eddie Murray. Then I open one rack pack of 1985 Topps and get a nice Clemens (about the 35th card though).

Here they are (what grade do you think they'd get?) -

Centering is a little off on the Murray...so I will give it an 8.

I do not think the Clemens will get a 10......so lets give it a 9.

I agree. The Clemens is off top to bottom, but a 9 sounds good.

  • Murray - 8

    Clemens - 9

    Good luck

  • murray 9oc, clemens 8 - unless the 2 glitches at the top left and right are extra pieces (then who knows)

I would be happy with these pulls!
  • Thanks guys. I'll have to include these for the monthly special.

BTW - there are no 10's yet for Murray in OPC. Would have been cool to get the first. image I'll keep trying...

  • Republican - No, I'm not happy; I'm ecstatic!!!!!! A day like today is why it costs me so much money buying old packs. image

It's good to have this board to share these pulls - my wife just doesn't understand why I'm jumping up and down with glee. image

Both look like 9 OC's to me. If you asked for no qualifiers, the Murray would probably be a 7, and the Clemens would probably be an 8.

I agree with Josh. (regarding the Murray) the Clemens appears to be centered within the parameter.

The color on the Clemens is not vibrant, that is what concerns me more then its centering.

    Nice pulls though!!

the reverse of the clemens, is it the vibrant green or is it a tad faded?

Actually the color on the Clemens is a lot better than the scan shows. The first thing that caught my eye when I pulled the card was the color. I pulled another Clemens last week that looked like it had gone thru a washing machine - so I was exceited about the color on this one. I don't know what to say about the color on the back. I have about 800 1985 Topps and I don't like the color on any of them. So the best I can say is that, comparatively speaking, the color on the back is good.

Lets see. PSA grades centering based on the worst part of the card, if the image is slightly tilted, like it is in the Murray.
    Minimum Threshholds:
    PSA 10 = 60/40
    PSA 9 = 65/35
    PSA 8 = 70/30

    Murray:
    l/r = 62/38
    t/b = 32/68

    Clemens:
    l/r = 53/47
    t/b = 61/39

Assuming centering is the only problem, and you go for no qualifiers, I'd say..
    Murray = PSA 8
    Clemens = PSA 9

Regardless of the centering, that Murray's an awesome looking card! Great pulls!

I would agree with Murray 7, and Clemens 8. But, the Murray might get an 8 as well.

murray 7, clemens 8. murray is too diamond cut and cut too close on the bottom l/r . I probably would not submit the murray and be happy with an awesome raw card. I don;t think grading can add any value over raw in this case.

    Nice pulls!

I can't really see the corners well enough to say with certainty.

But if I were to guess?

    Murray - 8OC
    Clemens - 9

    Good luck
I think you did real good!!!

  • Just an update for those of you who remember this post:

31407099 1978 O-PEE-CHEE 154 EDDIE MURRAY ALL-STAR ROOKIE Not Holdered, Did not meet Minimum Size Requirements

    31407100 1985 TOPPS 181 ROGER CLEMENS N/A 8

I'm a little PO'd about the Murray - guess I'll have to resubmit.

BTW, mailed these on Saturday Jan 7th image

Now that I go back and look at the big scan, you can see how small the Murray is (compared to the Clemens). I pulled a similar small Trammell / Molitor RC from a 78 vending box last year, and never sent it in because I was sure it wouldn't get holdered (but it's completely unaltered!). You might have a tough time even resubmitting that one.
