Grading results hindsight

When you get unexpected grades on your submissions, and you get the cards back, do you often see the thing you missed, or are you still left wondering "What happened!?!"

Both. Usually I do fairly well but the dreaded surface wrinkle gets me sometimes.

  • Usually. Sometimes I'm completely mystified, though.
  • Well, since I'm still fairly new at this (card grading), I have to say that I haven't a clue when they come back. I've read a lot of tips on this board and felt that I've learned a lot - but I try to really inspect the cards closely before I send them out and estimate the grade. I'm getting better, but when I'm off 2 grades, I still don't know why. If PSA say a card is a 6 when I thought it was an 8, then I guess it is just a 6 because they say so. Would be nice if some grading information, like a check list, was included.

And then there was the 64 Topps Mantle that I sent on my first submission. I though it was a 7 - it came back a 3!! I had a large scale scan of the card before I sent it and I looked at it again and couldn't firgure it out. So I decided to keep the card and busted it out of the holder. That's when I discovered that it had a crease! It did not have that crease in the scan I took. Hmmmmm ????

I am usually pretty good (within one grade of my expectation). But, I have been had a few times due to the aforementioned surface wrinkle (not recently though, thankfully). I will say that I am more often disappointed than I am gleefully surprised.
