Any Team Collectors Out There?

How many of you collect team sets of your favorite team? I do. I am just wondering how many team collectors are out there.

I started back about three of four years ago collecting St Louis Cardinals team sets. My goal was to get every regular Topps Cardinals card ever made from 1951 to present. I never thought I would make it, but I did it in about 2 years. After that, I started going after vintage Bowman from 1948 to 1955. After I finished that, I started going after vintage inserts, oddballs, and other modern companys. I think that will be never ending.

Anyway, I enjoy collecting team sets very much. Anybody else?

    Frank,

My main focus in collecting has been Green Bay Packers team sets from 1948-1979.

I have a website dedicated to the endeavor.

    Loves me some shiny!

While I am mainly a player collector, I do have a side project of collecting Dallas Cowboy cards. I have most of the major issue releases up to 1990, but still need to fill some holes here and there. I pick up the modern ones once in a while if I see some really cheap--there are just way to many modern releases to be real serious about getting all of them. If I ever finish the player collections, then maybe I'll put more work into the modern Cowboys.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I am very much a team collector. That's what got me back into collecting back in '97. My goals then were to have every Ram and Dodger from Topps and Bowman. I'm not a condition sensitive collector when it comes to vintage, so I've been able to get close relatively cheap. My Dodger Topps run is complete with the exception of '52, which I am far, far away - of the 32 cards in the set, 16 are high numbers (including Jackie, Pee Wee and Campy). That's a long shot to ever get done, but having said that, I never thought I'd get this far when I started. For the Bowman Dodgers, I'll be done just as soon as my last acquisition arrives ('49 Duke Snider RC). The Rams have proven to be a little more elusive, mostly because I have put more emphasis on baseball. I need several early Bowmans, and only one Topps (a '72 high number). I also need a few '64 Philly Gum to close out that run. Also on the wantlists are T-205 and T-206 Brooklyn Superbas, and the '33 Goudey Dodgers. Not in a huge hurry on those - they'll be added eventually.

In addition, I've always done a few modern team sets. This always means Topps, but also includes Fleer Ultra (with the Gold and Platinum Medallion parallels), Upper Deck (regular set) and a couple others. I usually just pick those off when they're released. I'll let some of those mega case busters throw 'em up on the Bay and snag 'em from there.

BTW, carew4me, I like your Packers page very much. I've thought about doing something similar to that with both my Dodgers & Rams. Like you, I am also chasing any Sports Illustrated issue that has a Dodger or Ram on it.

  • I am an Angels Team collector. My website is listed below in my sig. The project is taking me awhile since I am on a budget. I am now down to a few low pop vintage cards and starting on the modern cards. I have some modern cards still pending from the November special and have a quite a few ready to go for the January special. It has been a fun project and have met a few other team collectors along the way.

This might be a good thread to start a network of team collectors to trade cards with, especially the modern cards. There are a few other team collectors I try to help out by pulling only sharp cornered and centered modern cards out of their teams. I put them in individual card savers and send out. They do the same for me. If anyone is interested in doing so, please send me PM or email.

If anyone has the following "vintage" cards in PSA 8 or better, I would be interested in them to help complete some years of my project. They are all fairly low pop cards:
    1962 #176 Eddie Yost (Batting)
    1962 #287 George Witt
    1962 #343 Albie Pearson

    1963 #335 Leon Wagner
    1963 #496 Rookie Stars

    1965 #11 A.L. Strikeout Leaders

1969 #78 Tom Satriano (Stump keeps outbidding me on this one. I finally found a raw card that might grade a 8)

    1971 #61 A.L. Batting Leaders
    1971 #664 Rookie Stars Pitchers

Looking for Los Angeles/California/Anaheim Angels in PSA 8 or better

I have near complete runs of team sets for the Chargers, Padres, Rams, Raiders and Lakers from inception to 1990. I'm also working on team sets for the Dodgers from 1958 to 1990, and Angels from 1961 to 1990.

I want just about every Pirates card issued by anyone through the early 1990s. So, I'm pacing myself. I have most of the Topps cards from 1955 to 1991 raw. They are in albums so that I can look at them.
I am also very very slowly collecting graded Topps regular issues. I have a link in my sig line.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

  • Right now I'm working on the following team sets:

    Milwaukee Brewers 1977-82 Topps
Milwaukee Bucks 1969-81 Topps and 1986-89 Fleer

The most fun I have had collecting in a long time! image

I forgot to mention this - I too have my Cardinals collection raw, and in albums. Also, especially when it comes to the early vintage, I am not picky about condition. My goal was just to get it done. For instance, I have a 1948 Bowman Stan Musial rookie that is in Pr-Fr condition. BUT, I only paid like $55 for it. On the other hand, there are 4 1952 Topps high numbers that Cardinals, but mine are pretty nice. So, it just depends. Since I buy and resell big collections, anytime I get vintage Cardinals, I always replace w/ the best conditined cards. Geordie, I'm glad there's not 16 1952 Topps high numbers that are Cardinals!!! I think I would still be working on that one too! Good luck.

Creeper, I like the idea about the network. I have no idea how it would work or anything, but it sounds interesting. We could post each of our want lists. That would be a start.

I have a complete Yankees team set run in Topps from '67 to present.....fleer & donruss from 81, and other brands & oddballs thrown in along the way. I will try to eventually cover all yankee topps but the Mantle cards will just break me to try it now.

I've got a mess of SF Giants stuff (even from their NY days), mostly 60s. I'm going for annual team sets. I've sent a few cards in for grading (key rookies), but I'm not planning on getting the majority of the cards graded, I just want to have them.

I've also got a growing collection of autographs from Giants All Stars through the years. I'm not going to break myself for a Mel Ott auto though. :-)
