Help to decide........

Every year I manage to hide part of my year end bonus from my wife. It looks like this year im going to get away with about $6oo bucks. Every year I try to buy at least one Mantle card. This year I was trying to decide between the 57 mantle in a Psa 6 or a 62 Mantle in Psa 7. Which one would you get and why ?

that is a CLASSIC way to start off a question. Hope she doesn't read these forums! My wife knows 100% about my $200 annual sportscard budget.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

well, now that we have that out of the way which one would you get the 57 or the 62 ?

  • Neither. You should really strive for a '52 Bowman PSA 1 (MK) image

yeah, those 52 bowman mantle's are sweeet! lol image

  • Wow. That's a tough choice as both are nice cards. I would personally go for the '57 as I think that set will increase in popularity and price over the coming year. Plus if you are going for sheer nostalgia value, the 57 card talks up his triple crown season on the back (but never actually states 'triple crown'--guess it wasn't really the term back then)

On a side note, I found this '62 on Ebay that is one of the ugliest Mantle auctions I've ever seen.

proof that Mantles don't always sell in any condition
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

I am very torn between the two, I saw a couple of great looking examples on the bay last nite,(have them in my favs) both are centered extrememly well for the grade. If I could pull up E- bay at work I would show ya. I think you are right about the 57 increasing in value more, however I really wanted one of those in a 7 also. Plus the woodgrain on the 62's give me a boner.image

Buy the '62. Save up for a while to get a '57 you'll really like. I always buy the best condition that fits into my budget. That way you'll like what you have and won't constantly be thinking about upgrading. You can focus on your next goal.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

Thanks Arch, thats the one I was leaning to.

  • Get a 62. The problematic wood borders are always an issue. If you find a NM one, grab it.

I vote for the '62 as well. Those borders are tough. Remember though, "Buy the card, not the holder."

I have learned to love the 57's, but my vote would be for the '62 in this case.

Maybe you are referring to this little beauty? 62 Topps Mantle PSA 7

Looks like a rock star of a 7 in my book.

it's a high end 7.. i would guess the seller being who it is, that he originally had hopes of resubmitting to get an 8.. i could be wrong..

That is the One ! Perfectly centered, no chipping on the edges, corners are a little touched but thats ok by me. This is the best near mint 62 mantle I have ever seen. I hope the one in the picture is the one that they are selling? Anyone ever deal with consignmints?
