Hard for me to justify this price!!!!!!!

Searching eBay and noticed this beauty!!!

Caddy rookie

1958 Jim Brown PSA 7------population 223, SMR $475
1966 Gale Sayers PSA 8----population 171, SMR $500
1976 Walter Payton PSA 9--population 268, SMR $500

Or I can spend $700 for a guy who's played 14 NFL games numbered to 299!!!

Which makes more sense??? No wonder several of these modern prices drop so dramatically
over time. They're too jacked up to start with!!! Now Stalin if you see this, I know he's good,
but come on. I think I'll pass. I sure understand pulling one and selling, but Caddy better
be real good for a long time if this price will stay in this range. JMO

  • Well people collect what they like and SP Authentic football is always a big release with the rookie patch autos.
I mean I just sold a 2004 Larry Fitzgerald for $250.00 which I think is pretty impressive in the modern market. I believe that one books at $300 now but it was at $250 for the longest time. I sell a lot of modern and I usually never see cards selling for book or close to.
I myself would prefer the older cards but not everyone else does.
  • Am I missing something here with that card? That swatch looks like a piece of jersey from the old style Bucs jerseys, not a patch...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Not only that, but it is Serially #'D 283/299 - good grief, take a chance on landing one of the other 298 fer cryin' out loud! I'm not an expert at shill bidding, but the top bidder has over 1200 feedback, so he must want it really bad.

What amazes me is not that its currently at $650, but that 5 people are willing to spend $475 or more on it. That being said, if you have the money and thats what you want, more power to you.
Always looking for 1996 Select Certified Football.

Looks more like the material that is on the end of the sleeve on the jersey instead of actual patch material.

Nothing really unusual about the price level; Manning, Moss, Vick, Brady, etc have all had cards sell for comparable levels when they were hot, so while the bidding on this card is high in my opinion, it's nothing shocking.

It will be interesting to see what the /25 version goes for.

I agree the price itself isn't shocking compared to what other rookie autos sell for from SP Authentic, arguably the biggest selling football product.

My shock is in the fact you can buy Walter Payton, Jim Brown, or Gale Sayers rookie cards with a SMALLER print run in the specific grade for signifcantly less. And I would bet that in 25 years, we'll still be talking about Payton, Brown, and Sayers. Caddy? Who knows. 99 times out of a 100 probably not. I think 99 times out of a 100 the other three cards will hold their value better. Rookie autos that come out selling for $750 don't have a lot of upside.

Also, in my mind, Manning and Brady rookies are bad examples. Brady has three Super Bowl rings, Manning is in the process of owning every QB record there is, he already has several. A lot different than speculating about a running back who has played 14 games.

And let's not forget, Brady's RC came out at about 25 Bucks!!! A little more room for potential. And although Manning came out a little higher...........well let's just say if you have to accomplish what Brady and/or Manning has to get a bump in price, then most players will fall short.

I might also add I COMPLETELY agree with the statement of "If you have the money and want the card....." That's what collecting is all about. It's a cool card of an up and coming player. I was only commenting on the fact that I don't think one will do well over time financially with this card. If that's not important to you as a collector and money is no object, then good for you!!! I wish I could say the same.

I'd rather have any of the other three for less price for my collection, that's all.

Just take a look at Warner, James, McNabb, and Roethlisberger cards, man. It's tough to justify spending that much money on any football RC during the guy's rookie year. If the Bucs get bounced on Saturday, look for a steady, sure decline. Even if they win the SB, when the Reggie Bush wave breaks, all other recent RBs will be dumped to buy him.

    Wow!!!

Here's another, this one numbered to 25. I guess the buyer justifies this as being 1 of only 25 in the world, but it's the same card as the one numbered to 299.

    Check out this price!!

nice looking but pricey Caddy rookie
