9 SGC crossovers...mixed results...

I sent in 9 cards, 8 were SGC 92 or 8.5 and one was an sgc 88 which is a straight 8. All cards were 1960-1971 FB and were sent in on the December special amongst 80 or so other cards.

The 88 was graded an 8 so that was a straight cross.

One of the 92's(8.5) actually got a 10! A common, but I was still pretty stoked.

The other 7 SGC 92's all got PSA 8's. I found it unreal that SGC found something that made these 8 stand apart from a straight 8, but PSA didn't award one of them better than the 8.

Oh well, I think I will play the game for a while longer and see how the results go. I just wanted to share as everyone seems to wonder how things cross.

  • Well I have three Brian Winters rookies sitting here that I busted out of SGC holders. They were a 7(84), 8.5(92) and a 9(96) so we will see what I get back when I submit.

    Ha!

I am glad you responded BWFan. I actually just pulled this from a 78-79 set that i had on the shelf and gave a look thru. I was looking for stars and well centerd cards and I saw the centering and then the name and thought of you. So i pulled it.

I would be happy to send it to you if you think it may be an upgrade from your 78. I looked at yours in your registry set and thought that it may actually be an upgrade. LMK.

  • I have plenty of 9's for that year but I actually need an upgrade of his 1979-80 card if you or anyone has one.
For some reason that one never pops up in a 9
Thanks for the offer though! image
  • Jordan,
I have had a couple of 92's (and an 88) that I felt were mint make the jump to 10. It is great--for financial reasons--but speaks volumes of PSA's 10 these days. I sent in a '67 that was graded SGC 86. I was pissed as I felt it was a strong NM/MT card ( I was expecting an 88 or even a 92 on it). Anyway, I cracked it and sent it to PSA hoping they would agree with me and award it the 8 it deserved--they felt it was MINT 9 worthy...go figure.

As for your 92's: keep in mind that whatever held them back from the 96 likely held them back from the PSA 9. SGC, however, tends to look more closely at the card. The eye-appeal is factored in many times. Perhaps you have some really nice-lookin' 8's that fail to meet the SGC technical merits of a 96. Was there anything you saw prior to cracking them out that you felt held them back?
The most important thing for you to ask yourself is, "who's grades did I fall in line more with?" Clearly you felt that PSA "gifted" you the 10, but how 'bout the others? I'm interested to know more since you grade with PSA and seem to have an eye for quality.

    Happy New Years Folks,
My take on SGC to PSA is that except for the occasional full grade or more jump as in the PSA 10 you were awarded the majority of the reviewed cards are going to end up either a 1/2 point above or below the SGC grade. I attribute that more to the PSA grading system than to the quality of the card. Without the benefit of that 1/2 grade designation being available to the PSA graders a quality card that is definitely fits the criteria for a PSA 8 but just falls short of a PSA 9 will in most cases remain a 8 as was the case with your group of cards. I have a 1961 Fleer and a 1969 Topps Basketball set in the SGC registry and have sent quite a few PSA graded cards over the last few years to them for crossover review and like you have either gained or dropped a half point more often than a straight or point higher grade crossover. In any event I have great confidence in both these services and just want to have a quality card in my sets on both registry's and stick to my personal motto that a quality card is just that regardless of which graded slab its encased in. Again Happy New Year and Good luck with your sets.

I've had pretty good success with crossing SGC to PSA as well..And not so good success crossing GAI and BVG.

The only thing to watch out for with SGC graded cards that can lower the grade at PSA is the centering. An SGC 88 doesn't necessarily meet the PSA 8 centering standards. But in all other facets, SGC is a great/cheap way to find solid cards to cross to PSA sets.

As far as GAI goes, of the 6 i've popped and sent in (never send it in the other companies case) I've never been upgraded, and i've actually been downgraded 3 of the 6. Needless to say i no longer spend money on GAI for crossovers.

Jury is still out on the new SCD, as I have 3 of those in at PSA right now awaiting grades. All were SCD 9's, and I would be surprised if any of them actually end up in PSA 9 cases. They just weren't all that great, but we'll see.

In my experience I have had SGC 6 cross to a PSA 8 and I have now a SGC 7 that Im hoping will get a PSA 6 and not a 5.

So grade wise it is a wash.

the consolation is that i have less then 100.00 into the 2 cards.
