Wow, how the mighty have fallen!!!

I just purchased several Mark McGwire "rookies" and a Ken Griffey UD Rookie and was amazed at how much these cards have fallen off their respective highs.

Take a look at these auctions and let me know what you remember these cards peaking at in the hey day.

Thanks

1985 Topps McGwire PSA 9 (Saw this issue reach $400 during the home run race in 1998)

1987 Fleer Update McGwire BGS 9.5 (Never really tracked this one)

1987 Donruss McGwire BGS 9.5 (I know PSA 10's were in the $400 range at one point)

1989 UD Griffey PSA 9 (I believe I saw this issue reach $225 before)

  • Those 87 Fleer Update McGwires in PSA 10 were, at one time, selling for hundreds of dollars ($300-500), when the population was really low.

I foolishly paid $300 for an 1987 Donruss PSA 10 of McGwire when I was pretty young (18 or so). image

It is truly amazing how far they all have fallen. I recall when 1985 Topps McGwire PSA 10's were selling in the $5,000 range...

All I can say is wow!!

The McGwire may never recover with all the steroids hovering over his career.

Now, the Griff? That may still have a chance if the guy could just put a few good seasons together again?

    Timing is everything in life.

I think the card was graded fairly based on what I see. Sure, on a different day, it could have been a PSA 8, but it could also have easily been a BGS 10 Pristine. image

That is what I thought at first until I looked closer and saw it was a nice card - worthy of a 9. Only thing I didn't like was a scuff mark on the holder and a little mark on the top left hand corner. Other than that, I'm happy with it.

I agree. It looks to me to be, what's the word, a diamond cut? The whole picture is rotated a little bit - just look at the top border.

What I find strange is the drop in Griffey prices in general. I picked up a PSA9 Topps traded for around 4 bucks. Looks like a good time to jump in and grab these guys at discount prices before Mac goes into the HOF.

The thing about those two cards is that nearly every single person in the world who wants one, has one.

There have been nearly 50,000 1989 UD Griffey's graded. Out of those, 15,370 have been graded PSA 9 and 1,149 PSA 10. That's a whole lotta cards.

The McGwire has been submitted nearly 45,000 times. There aren't as many PSA 9's as Griffey ("only" 4200 or so), but there are 25,834 PSA 8s!

    Southsider,

Excellent point!!! It's all about supply and demand. And that is a lot of cards. That's also why in the other thread about the Cadillac rookie card I chose examples of cards with a SMALLER print run as the Williams to compare prices.

But you're right about the other cards. I bought a raw Griffey about two years ago for $30 and sent it to PSA, received a 10, sold for $515. Probably wouldn't get that now. I have the McGwire and Griffey in a PSA 9 so I never shop for them either. Sounds like there's 1000's of others in my boat....already own the card.

I'll bet there are more being graded a 9 or 10 every week than there are new collectors being brought into the hobby, so it may only get worse. Hope not.

    Shawn.
