New PSA pricing! No more commons versus stars!

The debate over commons versus stars has finally been decided. I got a letter in the mail this morning outlining PSA's new pricing and they will no longer distinguish between stars and commons it will be based on declared value. They will also have Guaranteed Turnaround Times of same day (2 levels, Premium and Walk-Through), 2 business days (Super Express), 5 business days (Express) and 10 business days (Regular). The time still starts when the receiving department processes the order (return delivery is not included in the time). If they go over the guaranteed time you wil get grading vouchers equal to the number of days they are late (of course the guarantees do not apply during weeks of major shows that PSA attends). Regular submissions will now start at $15/card (including Tall Boys) and bulk submissions will start at $6/card ($8 for Tall Boys). Autograph cards will cost a minimum of $20/card. Changes take affect beginning 1/15/06! image

I like that there is no longer any difference between stars and commons. I think the fact that the 5 day price has gone up $3 / card in the last 2 years is kinda lame. At least now I can submit my 50's and 60's cards that I've been holding on to.
  • I wonder if this means the days of the 50's $6 and 60's $5 specials are gone(since they use to be just for commons)....I guess we will have to wait a few months to see.

I do expect price increases this year. Card submissions are declining and don't make as much profit as the coin biz. Plus PSA has to pay for the gem grading biz they just bought.

So does that mean they they truly expect the turnaround on the current 1972 - special to be around 5 days?

If there's less demand for their services, then I would expect prices to decrease, not increase.

Does this include autographed cards that were produced by the manufacturer? I hope not, because they'd be sending a lot of their business to Texas if it does.

Edited to Add: If they want more submissions, I think they should also allow bulk 100 card submissions to include modern and vintage. It's a lot easier to come up with a bulk submission that's cost effective when you can submit cards from different eras.

Boo! Hiss! No more Premium Common service ($10/10-day guarantee) and pre '53 vintage bulk (45-day turnaround on minimum of 25 cards) goes from $8 to $10. I wish I had the good sense to foresee this when I decided to renew my membership a couple of months ago.

Yep. "Autographed cards dated 1998 and later (direct from manufacturer or previously authenticated by PSA/DNA) may be sent through any of the listed services (note restrictions and requirements for each level)." Autograph card grading & authentication at the $20/card rate (20 business day turnaround) is for cards with a declared value under $500. The next step up from there is Express (5 business days and a declared value of $500-$999; note: autographed cards are still 20 business days at this level) which is $30/card. At least that's the way I read it. image

The part of it that I hate is the price rise in T3 (Turkey Red) grading. Price is going from $35 each to $50 eachimage

I've got 13 T3 Hall of Famers that I haven't been able to send in yet because I haven't had the money available. Now, instead of $455 to get them graded, I'm looking at $650image
