    Jeff,

Dude, knockout '56 Campanella that you have there! Congratulations on winning the absolute beauty. Thanks for sharing, and it will be nice to see the scans as you receive them too.

To me the 1953, 1955, and 1956 Topps are three timelessly designed beauties - perhaps my three favorite baseball issues ever. I don't have registries for either of those issues(yet), only some cards of stars here-and-there while I potentially decide which of those three issues to focus on in the future. Here's one of Campy's teammates depicted on a 1956 Topps that I happen to own:

Me and my big mouth. Prepare to be underwhelmed. Here's my latest pickups:

    image

Finally, this is the biggie I've talked about. I'm a bit disappointed with it in hand as it seems to be a little short in the slab. Oh well. I couldn't pass up centering like this.

    image

Jeff, awesome Big Klu! I love the 7.5s. Usually such a bargain. Also, I'm happy to see others post in this thread. That's a truly stunning Robinson. I'm jealous. Now that's a biggie.

Aw, man! Some terrific pickups are shown above. A "big up" on the Whitey Ford...that joint is hot! A visually appealing card of a Yankees Hall Of Famer is also a good potential investment, so congratulations on that beauty-in-full. What a classic.

The action poses on the 1956 Topps are outstanding. Speaking of '56 Topps Yankee HOFers, how about the pasteboard depiction of Mantle going into the crowd for a potential game-saving catch? No wonder that's the one card from this set to make PSA's cut for "Top 250 Sportscards in the Hobby". The good news about 1956 Topps that I see lately is a price trend toward being able to scoop up some sweet deals right now while in this deep "recession".

It looks like Jeff's above Campanella shows him about to beat the throw home and be called "safe". It looks like the same situation has an outcome with a foregone conclusion for Jackie - because he's already created a dust cloud and appears "safe". image BTW, I bought the above Robinson as a BVG 8, recognized it as the bomb yo, then used my bandsaw to saw it out. A week later was summarily rewarded with the PSA 8.5 NM-MT+.

Here's one of the few other '56s that I have around depicted below. You got it - another player sliding home. It's from my Richie Ashburn Player Set Registry, and I bought it in the same PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ holder that it currently resides within.

Yeah, just looking at some more 1956 Topps cards on this thread and elsewhere over the weekend, it stokes my interest. In fact, among the three sets I am choosing from to consider doing in the future - 1953 Topps, 1955 Topps, and 1956 Topps, the '53 and '56 are emerging as frontrunners. The artwork is so strong on both issues.

In fact, I guess that the 1956 Topps is one of the last (if not the last) vintage issue where artwork was predominately illustrated on the cards; and what brilliant art it is. In the meantime, I think I'll just add some 1956 Topps stars here-and-there, and see where that leads. '56s lack rookie card power, but that seems to be more than cancelled out with stellar designs and an almost obscene preponderance of mega-stars - Ted Williams, Mantle, Berra, Snider, Koufax, Mays, Aaron, Jackie Robinson, Clemente, and probably even an omission or two there. (!)

It would be nice if someone had a swell '56 Mantle to post here too. Everything depicted above are straight-up classic bomber in my book! Thanks for those that have shared. What a set!

I will post my undergraded mid grade Mantle when I get home. It is nothing like these 8 and 8.5's that everyone else is posting.

Weinhold...you asked for a Mantle so here it is. I also have about 50 PSA 7 dupes of the set would like to trade or sell to someone working on this set including many of the stars.

Brett....nice Whitey Ford...you said you were disappointed that it seemed a little short in the case?? Were you implying that it is trimmed??

Dave...hope we all are convincing you to get going on your set!

    Jeff,

That Mantle is beautiful. So well centered.

Hopefully just paranoia with the Ford. I'm not an expert at detecting trimming. Especially in the slab. In addition to the card not filling the slab, the font on the flip looked a little funky. Bolder than the print on my flips from that era. I added it to my set with no problem. So that's a relief.

Thanks for dropping the Mantle scan in there - classic material! I just went through some earlier posts in this thread and looked at some other scans posted. They all have one thing in common - there isn't a bad looking card in the whole bunch! It's hard to find threads with more scans per post than this one...and no wonder, considering the timeless, vibrant design of the 1956 Topps. Stellar stuff indeed.

I am upset on the lack of 8's-ZERO is tough to swallow. I did get 30 out of 43 7's and one 7.5. I guess over all it is ok. Also I am about 200 cards deep in subs from the best of my 56 set and I have about 140 7's and 8's with many stars. I have about 100 more quality cards that could get 6-8 and then it is ebay time.

I have these extras if anyone needs them
    PSA 7's
    54,59,70,146,217,255,280
    PSA 6's
    235,299

    Jeff,

I think the t/b centering is off a little too much for me. Not only is it tough to find centered, but I rarely see a 7 or 8 available on eBay it seems. Odd when you consider other stars (admittedly much bigger stars) are constantly available. Aparicio is also the biggest rookie in the set, so you'd think you would see more of them available.

Jeff, that is an outstanding Aparicio card. I have also been looking for a centered card and have an 8 that has decent centering, but not nearly as nice as your 7, so I have an idea how long and frustrating you search has been. It is a tough card to find centered and commands a premium.

I inched over the 80% mark in September. The Small was an SGC 88 crackout as I posted earlier. The McDougald and Lemon were won from BBCE auctions on eBay a couple of weeks ago. Love knocking out those tough 3rd series cards.

benderbroeth... Thanks for the kind words. I'm afraid I'll soon get to the point where I can't find any cards that I need/like. But I'm not there yet. Still adding 2 or 3 per month.

Jeff... You've actually completed a greater % of the set than me, so you should finish before me. Did you bid on the McDougald or Lemon? The McDougald has a print smudge on the bottom border, but that's the nicest Lemon I've ever seen. Really happy with that one. I was outbid on a PSA 8 Billy Martin the same night also from BBCE.

Also, I must apologize. Looking at my reply to your Aparicio, it appears that I'm cavalierly dismissing the card. That wasn't my intention. That is the best centered one I've seen. I am waiting for a better centered one, but if it comes down to it and that's one of the last 10 cards I need, I would accept that one all day.

    Hi Brett,

I bid on the Lemon...was a really nice card and thought I bid pretty strong. Glad you got it though!

No problem on the Aparicio...it works for me and that's what counts. I hope you find a nice one but they are few and far between. I have seen a couple of centered 8s but they went for stupid money.

Yeah, I am a little bit further along but think your centering standards are a bit tougher than mine...glad you are continuing to find one's you need.

    Hi guys,

I have a question relative to this set that would like an answer or speculation. Relates to the team cards with the three variations...center, left and dated. Specifically, why are the Orioles Team Cards #100 so much more expensive than the others (Cubs 11, Phillies 72, Indians 85, Reds 90, Braves 95)?

    Thanks Much

    Hey Jeff,

Is it more expensive across the board with all variations? If I'm not mistaken the dated variation is the least available of the team variations. I wonder if being the last card in Series 1 (the old bottom of the stack, more susceptible to rubber band damage thing) would account for lower pops for this card? Hmm. Good question. Looking back, frankly I'm almost embarrassed at what I paid for my 7.5.

Also really happy to get such a nice Mizell. It's in the 30's of the low pops for this set.

Looking back on the year, I picked up 44 cards for my set and moved up four places and now stand in 52nd place in the registry out of 129 sets. I have 286 of the 342 cards, so I still need 56 to finish the set. My goal is to finish in 2011. That will make it an even 10 years it will have taken me to complete the set.

    Hi Brett,

Great pick ups as usual. You are going to have the nicest set in the registry for the grade. Your insistence on only nicely centered cards is making for one beautiful set. I wish I had your patience, as ten years is a long time to stay focused and interested. Congrats!

Since you are getting close to the finish line but will be next?? Will it be your 66 set that has been on the backburner??

Thanks Jeff. Truthfully my interest has been up and down since I started the set. I'd say I've really been going hard for the past three years or so and now I'm pushing hard for the tape.

As for my next set, I think I will pursue that 66 set. However, I like to have a 50s, a 60s and a 70s set going. I even started an 83 set this year so I'll have one going in four decades. I'm pretty sure my next 50s set will be 55 Bowman.

While adding my cards to the registry today, I noticed that your set was closing in on 90% (Free grades!). Congratulations. It seems like just yesterday you were messaging me for any extras. What are your plans? Are you going to finish in 2010?

    Brett,

I will be submitting for my free grades soon. Did you know that you can get 5 for each the basic and master set. You can also get them for each team set. Pretty sweet deal.

I initially started a few years ago after being out of the hobby on 60s sets. Got partly done on about 5 of them and then switched to 50s sets. So I am currently selling off my 60s stuff to fund my 50s interest at the moment.

If your going to be working on your 66 set I still have about 125 PSA 8s. I can get you the list if you want.

    Jeff,

My problem will be having enough raw to submit when I hit 90%. I've submitted several SGC cards cracked out with varying success. I currently have 1 SGC that EOTd that I'm holding for my free grades. I have all the confidence in the world in SGCs grading, it's just a matter of finding some nice ones. I'm not real keen on purchasing raw and submitting. Heck, I'd even take a chance with an old GAI slab if I could find some with nice eye appeal.

I'm still a long way from putting my attention towards another set. But, what do you have left in high #'s in 8 from 66?

    Brett,

I wont have many raw to submit with the freebies but will probably crack out the best ones that look undergraded and use them that way. May also use some of them for reviews.

    Jeff,

I wonder if you can strictly go with reviews on your freebies? I'd hate to go from an 8 to a 6.5 or even worse, EOT!

    PM sent re: the 66s.

    Brett,

Never thought about reviews with the free grades. You might be right though. If you have a card reviewed it can't go any lower than the current grade it is, only stay the same or higher.

Nice looking 56's everyone. This set is a real classic to say the least.

Hey everyone! I just started collecting this set. It's the first set I've ever done. I really like the layout of the cards. Jeff refered me to this thread. I purchased my first four cards last night on ebay. Don Keiner, Carl Erskine, Smokey Burgess, and Dick Donovan. Looking forward to sharing more with you guys.

Things have slowed to a crawl for me. I've only picked up two cards at auction since Dec. 1. Mostly BINs lately for me. You know you're not getting any bargains there. Thank God for Bing and Big Crumbs. Frustration/impatience has officially settled in.

BIN from the much maligned Levi (707 Sportscards).

My last auction win Jan. 10.

    Another BIN.

I'm not sure if I'm at the point where the nice cards I need will appear only sporadically, or if eBay sellers are shifting away from auctions towards BINs. Oh well, "Keep on keeping on" as Curtis Mayfield sang.

Good luck with your set Guru. I'd love to hear about any successes (or failures) along the way towards building it.

    Brett,

I am with you...there just dont seem to be any nice cards out there that I need for my set. In the last couple months I think I have added two. Maybe you should start working on your 66s in the meantime. Nice to hear from you.

After crying in my last post that I couldn't find any nice cards, I've been able to pick up a couple in the last month that I'm very happy with.

    image

A little over a year ago BBCE had a real nice run of cards on eBay and Jeff8877 and I determined which cards we were most interested in so as not to bid each other up. Do you recall that Jeff? Anyways... I was always very envious of the 7.5 Banks he picked up then, so I was surprised and pleased when this one came up. So I put in a strong bid for it and was fortunate enough to win it.

This Irv Noren is one of the lower pops in the set. The last time I checked it was the second toughest 8 (although it has been the lowest pop in the past). I'm at the point now where I'm going to have to concede a little bit on centering for the lower pops. Honestly, I thought this would be one of the last handful in the set I would need. So I was ecstatic to snag this one.

    image

After picking up these two ($$$), I'm hoping that there's another lull so that my funds can recover. Please hold off on auctioning off that dead centered Dale Mitchell or Rance Pless!!

    Hi Brett.

Nice cards as usual. I definately remember when we agreed not to bid each other up on cards we needed. Here is my Banks that you were referring to. I have beeen slowly picking up a few cards and am now at 91% complete. We probably need the same low pops that are impossible to find with decent centering.

Not sure if you still need the Aparicio but a very nice sgc 86 got listed tonight.

Jeff, don't tempt me. I really have to hold off for awhile. Anything over $50 right now and I'll have to pass.

Actually, I still need a number of stars. I'm down to 47 cards needed, and I'd classify about half of them as non-commons. Including arguably 3 of the 5 biggest cards in the set (Aaron, Koufax, Robinson). If I can pickup a card I need for under $100 at this point I'm extremely happy.

That's awesome that you passed the 90% mark. Have you sent in any cards for your free grades yet? Let me know the outcome when you do.

Steve Novella had a set break on eBay a week or two ago with some really nice cards. I'm wondering if anybody else on the boards was able to grab any? The set averaged out to an 8.04. So it was a Top 25 set. I had seven cards on my want list and narrowed my focus down to four that I would aim for.

This set had the best Dale Mitchell PSA 8 I had ever seen. Due to a timely tax return I decided to make a strong run at this tough, tough low pop. I ended up as the underbidder on the card, and after looking at VCP, it appears that the same dude is hoarding most of the PSA 8 Mitchell's. Looks like I may have to wait for a nice 7.

I only tracked the cards I was interested in, so I don't know how the set as a whole did. I'm wondering if a set break like this attracts a feeding frenzy and sale prices go through the roof. Of the seven cards I tracked, two went for under VCP avg., one went for VCP avg. and four went above VCP avg. Well above in some cases.

I was able to add these cards to my set.

With my additions this month, my set is at 297/342. About 87%.

    Hi Brett,

I was able to pick up only one card from the set break...Earl Torgeson PSA 8 for $26. I had about five others I put bids on that I thought were high and I got beat by a bunch. My set is going nowhere at the moment as it is getting tough to find ones I need at anything close to a reasonable price.

I need the Mitchell also so we are going to have to flip for who gets to bid on it...

    Jeff,

Yeah things have definitely slowed down. I still need to find 11 cards to hit the 90% mark for the free grades. At my current pace, that will be late Summer.

I thought I bid pretty strong for that Mitchell. But I have a feeling there's no way I could've won that card. By my count, the same guy has won 11 PSA 8 Mitchell's, 2 of the 3 8.5s and even a couple PSA 7s. That's only going back as far as VCP goes. He could have even more than that. Kind of lame if you ask me. Maybe sour grapes on my part. I don't know.

    Hi Footlong,

Welcome to the 56 discussion. I am working on a 56 master set and getting close to finishing. Cant say as I recall the team card centering being any tougher than most of the regular cards. The only thing more difficult about them is they dont seem to come up for auction as frequently and some of the variations are much tougher. Maybe some of the other guys can chime in with their experiences.

I guess I'll throw in my 2 cents. The last time I checked the Pop Report, there were 3 team cards in the Top 20 Low Pops (not including the variations). Since centering would be the primary reason that a card would be on the low pop list, imo, it would seem that the White Sox, Tigers and Pirates team cards would be particularly tough to find centered.

Things definitely remain slow. Added 3 more to reach the 300 plateau for my set.

I found it really difficult to find a nice Repulski. Then two really nicely centered 7s appeared on eBay for about $30 BIN. Happy to add this one at that price.
    image

The last I checked the Pop Reports, this Miller had been submitted for grading fewer times than any other card in the set (not including the team variations). Tough to find one this nice.
    image

Another tough one that was auctioned off at the same time as the Miller.
    image

Has anyone seen the recent Mile High catalog? A bunch of truly ugly 9s. There are some nice 8s in there though.
