DARKSIDE NEWBY -- COIN ID?

Normally I hang out in the US Forum, so I sincerely apologize if I show poor form here. I enjoy original and unique pieces of Darkside when I find really interesting things, but have not invested in any identification books due to my relative infrequent buying in this area.

But . .

Just picked up a fully original piece I'd like some help in identifying, (if this is permitted . . . if I'm just being lazy, I apologize and I'll go research like I probably should, but curiosity is getting the best of me!) roughly crown size, silver, condition is an original VG-F or so. Bust of Fredericus VI facing right with typical D.G. DAN:V:G:REX. on obverse. Reverse legends on the rim are EN RIGSDALER SPECIES with devices of a crown sitting on top of a coat of arms (4 sections dominated by animal motifs, primarily lions). Bottom has the date, 1828, with F. on each side.

I am aware that in the larger, European scheme of things, this is NOT really an older piece. But, I picked it up for a song and was just curious whether my minor investment was anything at all interesting.

I appreciate any help if that is approved here.

Happy New Year . . .and may all your copper be a nice original tone . . .

Shep is obviously correct . . . I need the ability to take pix, and I'll work on that. I might be able to figure out a scan, but I'll need to upgrade my photo set-up before I can effectively post one.

    Thanks . .

  • It's always great to image a Litesider to the Dark.

You have me confused by the denomination of "En Rigsdaler" instead of "En Rigsbankdaler".

KM#696.1, with the initials of Mintmaster Johann Friedrich Freund (who used both IFF and FF), was minted in 1828 as a Rigsbankdaler, matching your description in all other respects. It's 14.4470 g of .875 silver, valued at $35 VG, $80 F, $160 VF and $250 XF in the 2001 3rd Ed. 19th Century volume.

The Rigsdaler's shown are from later years, with different reverses.

    Another Krause goof?

  • image I guess it is a good idea to specify the country when supposedly IDing a coin.image

    Thanks Jester.

    Roy . .

First of all . . . my thanks! Your information is super. I just loved the original look and heft of the piece. I teach (however it's English) and am fascinated by history . . . so this piece's history, condition, and ultimate travels to Utah interest me.

I am viewing the piece as we correspond . . it is definitely "EN RIGSDALER SPECIES" in caps, no other letters in that legend. Historically, I presumed the " . . . DALER" would be a reference to a Taler/Thaler/Dollar . . but had no idea of anything else. Far be it from my position to question the Krause reference book, but I think you might be right . . . are they 'off' on this one?

Thanks again . . . and appreciate the welcomes, 1 jester! I'll be back to enlighten myself often!

Roy, you're the man! All I could manage to ID was the country.

  • It is listed in the 2000 edition Danish 'Sieg's Montkatalog' that a generous board member had sent me. At the time, in VG it was estimated at $40 and in F at $80.
