Portugal 1910 1 Escudo-opinions please

With a mintage of only (est.) 1000 I had never had this coin in hand before but had seen it once or twice on the forum over the past several years and loved the look: when I found it as a reasonably nice looking XF I impulse purchased.

Frankly I don't know this coin at all-isn't it a normal soft strike or is this simply XF wear? I thought the coin looked a little better than XF.

May I elicit opinions and images of other members examples of this coin?image

I'm not familiar with this coin either, but I'd second your suspicions that it is better than XF.

    Congrats on the fine acquisition!

It is a beautiful and classic design. Nice catch.

Yep, I like that one too!!! image

Why only 1,000??? What happened that year?

What's that big number '5' on the obv?

Sorry for so many questions, but that's an interesting looking coin.

I believe the 5 refers to October 5 celebrating the birth of the republic.

I would also like to know why there is such a low mintage listed in Krause? Is it accurate?

I think it is likely better than AU provided there are no significant hairlines. From the picture, hairlines may not be an issue. The strike looks weak. The bigger question in my mind is whether the coin is original. I would not get too hung up on originality with this coin because even if it was dipped and there is a slight residue, I don't think it impairs the coin significantly. My grade would be in the AU50 to 53 range and it looks like a keeper.

I would tend to agree. It looks like it's got a touch of wear on both sides along with the weak strike. And there's something strange at about 1 o'clock to 2 o'clock on the obverse that leads me to wonder about the surface. Cleaning is a major issue with this coin, and it's very hard to find an original example. Still, it's a lot nicer-looking than most I've seen.

BTW, I think the mintage was 1 million, not 1,000.

I wondered about that spot of cloudiness myself, but it looked like the cloudy toning that many silver coins get. It had a nice enough appearance for me to overcome any suspicions of dipping. There are no hairlines that I can see.

I thought a mintage of 1,000 was a little small but that is what Krause lists. Not the first of many mistakes in their books though.image

That's probably a typo. My 2001 edition says 1 million.
  • Mintage was 1,000,000 (one million).

    1.000 in Krause notation.

  • The mintage is definitely 1 million and i actually think its a strong strike for the type!image
XF to me, the main wear spots are the girls hat/hair on the obverse and the COA's castles and "quinas" on the reverse, but like newsman said, cleaning makes a huge difference, it is usual for this coins to be XF (few circulation years, silver hoarding...), and it looks like the coin have traces of an old dipping.
