PCGS Launches New First Strike Registry Sets

Here is an example of just one:

Example of New FS Set

Looks like Silver, gold and Platinum Eagles are now represented in all of the new First Strike Registry sets. One set (the combo of all silver, gold and Platinum Eagles) now required 300+ coins already. Plus, it looks like PCGS has already included year 2006 coins for these sets.

2005 was the First Year of "First Strike" and it looks like PCGS expects huge success with its FS program for 2006, especially with the alliance they formed with A-mark. In the area of FS Platinum I focus heavily in - as I have mentioned before, my experience has shown throughout 2005 that the "FS" designation does not add virtually any monetary value to the coin in the holder - BUT, what I believe it does add is DEMAND. Collectors simply love these First Strike coins - take a look how many MS69 Silver Eagles PCGS slabbed in 2003 and 2004 and then take a peek at 2005 pop figures with First Strike. It's all about marketing and the "First Strike" concept may have added hundreds, if not possibly thousands of new collectors to the hobby in the past year.

  • What amazes me most is that there are far, far more First Strike coins than regularly slabbed
coins on the whole. To me, it's like a brainwashing tactic to make people believe that First Strikes are
superior to the rest. Not only that, what about all the other new labels PCGS is coming out
with..... "BORN ON" labels? From what I read, there will be 250 Silver Eagles slabbed for every
day of the year with a "born on" dated label. How many collectors are going to try to collect
365 (give or take a few) Silver Eagles for one year? The plans for all the new labels for
different traditions, celebrations, dates, months, etc.....are all a marketing scheme anyway.
Just like the computer industry introducing the latest and greatest every month!!!!
SORRY......but it's all about money! And.....those that can afford it can relish in the fact that.....
the rich get richer!!!! And company execs and stockholders can celebrate too!

They will never adopt Wayne Herndon's idea. Sorry, Wayne.

I was flipping channels and came across the Coin Channel selling First Strike ICG coins. These were not inexpensive. From one aspect it seems over the top. First Strike MS70. But I guess I go after 'first strike' proofs when going after cameos.

Maybe the telemarketers understand the market better than the BST board. I don't know if it is access, impulse purchasing, raw marketing, education (about coins) or what ever that would maintain the Coin Channel's market segment.

I just wish I could get their prices.

    CC2GO,

My "Born On" post had a winkie image. I was just poking a little fun at the First Strike concept by taking it to its logical extreme. I second Mitch's doubt that PCGS would take the concept to that extreme.
