  • Knowing the diameter (and whether it's copper/bronze or tarnished silver) would greatly help in the hunt.

Lack of a toughra eliminates Turkey as a source.

If the 1308 at the bottom is a normal AH date, the coin could be from 1925-26.

I don't recall ever seeing a "35 whatzit" denomination on any Arab coin, so perhaps the 35 divided by a star at the top is a regnal year, and 1305 is an accession year, which would move the coin's mintage date to 1960-61.

Ah, what the heck, why don't we just wait for Newsman to tell us what it says?

  • Found itimage Should I share or let everyone have fun searching??
  • Is it Iran about 1890.

DCH tell us if you know.

1890 would be the correct date (AH1308) but not from Iran The coin is just slightly larger than a quarter

Hint - The coin was minted in Paris and has a torch privy mark

I'm not sure I would have been able to find it if the seller hadn't known the country. image

Right continent Syracusian, wrong coastal line. Think east coast. image

Comoro Islands, AH 1308 5 centimes

Happy New Year to all, BTW. image

Hey! I have one of those image

I won't give it away, but here are some other clues:

    The denom is 5 centimes.
The guy named on the obverse (right img) is Sultan Anjaz(?) Sayid Ali bin Sayid Amr.
It circulated on an island or two. image

    Dang slow computer! image
  • newsmannewsman Posts: 2,658 ✭✭✭
His name is Sayid Ali bin Sayid Amr. Sultan Anjaz is his title, I think, because the Comoros were once called Dawla Anjazanchiya (State of Anjazanchiya). I't's KM 1.2 BTW.

The denomination is at the top of the obverse (the right image) opposite the date.

  • << <i>The denomination is at the top of the obverse (the right image) opposite the date. >>

So what is the character I was reading as a "3", on the other side of the star?

That's an "S" for "santeem." Arabic spelling is phonetic.
