Any ideas or hopes on the January Special?

I would love to have a special on 1970's and 1980's baseball. I just bought some complete sets from 1970 to 1994.

1972 to Present - $ 5 each - Sports and Non-Sports Cards - Cards Valued Under $100 - No Minimum quantity required. --- Wonder why they dropped the value to $100? Hopefully that is not a trend to move people to the higher priced services.

$5 is nice but I wish they would drop it to $3 or $4, with a big minimum (100 or 200 cards), and value of less than $100. I know I have hundreds of cards from 70's and 80's I would like to get graded but $5 + postage adds up. Just my thoughts.

For the most part I don't mind a big minimum in exchange for a lower price per card. I just fail to understand the value limit per card.

Regarding the value limit, I'm sure PSA will use some "insurance" excuse to justify it. The real reason for the value limit is that PSA wants to grab a piece of the value added to a card after grading.

Generally speaking, a $200 card will be worth more graded than a $10 card. I don't think anything is wrong with PSA's value limits. If grading adds hundreds of dollars to the value of a raw card, the small increased grading cost is worth it.

I always assumed the value meant the value of the raw card. Is that correct?

I use the price I paid for the card or a condition appropriate value.

That is generally. Most of the time IF my Stars grade a 5 and my commons grade 10, my commons would sell for more!

The only time i get my own cards graded is when i have searched for over 2 years for a midgrade card with the centering i want on my 57 set without finding it...or the card is high priced enough in that grade that i might as well get the raw one i own graded....this happened to me with a player named Bill Virdon from 1957 topps......

I basically could not find this card centered....unless it was a psa 8 and going for WELL OVER 50.....it was horrible....i saw one advertised at ex-mt online for 10 bucks....and when i got it i was disappointed..i thought it was 5 due to one corner being somewhat soft..other 3 were almost nm-mt...but the card was centered 50/50/50/50 and it had a great picture....so i spent the 10 bucks to buy it raw. THEN...i spent the 15 bucks to get it graded....so 25 bucks for a 6 is HIGH...but if its a centered 6 so maybe its worth it....For my set that is

sure enough it graded a 6....and will be incorporated in my set...the former psa 7 that was somewhat OC is now in my "TO BE SOLD ON EBAY SOMEDAY" pile. I also had a peirsall centered 50/50 left to right and 55/45 to the top get a 7...i spent 10 bucks for that one and 15 to grade it as well.

i had pregraded them both psa 6.....pregrade as in my eyeball lookin them over. at any rate i have quite a few more raw i might get graded now if i cant find better centered already graded online.........

Loth fwiw I too prefer a true ex/mnt card over a 7 that is oc. True ex/mnt cards are sweet.

I just got my submission ready and in my Priority box, ready to go on Tuesday. I am sending in my 6 voucher cards, and 30 cards for the special. Everybody is talking about the $100 maximum value. I have a couple of cards that are over that (one is about $200 and one is about $150). On my invoice, I put $100. After all, it DOES say "DECLARED VALUE". I declared them at $100. My question is, what will they do? I alreday have them boxed, invoiced, and ready to go.

So, when it says "cards valued under $100", does that mean individual cards, or the whole submission combined?

I am pretty sure it means each card, not the total. They would be limiting themselves greatly. Somebody help us out with this.

    It's per card.

Don't they do this same special every January? It seems like they did it last year.

Can anybody help on the "DECLARED VALUE" vs "REAL VALUE" issue on the the special?

  • Ive always been under the impression it was all about the insurance. You could have a $2000 card as long as its "declared" 100 or less---for insurance purposes your fine. Someone may correct me but thats how i understand it.

  • It's per card and I believe as long as you have the declared value under the limit then you are fine. They have some grace there from what I understand. They (PSA) just doesn't want you sending in a '52 Topps Mantle at the $13 or $15 service level. I think that if you had a card that would have an SMR of $100 or less if below lets say a 7 even though it could be worth much more if graded and 8,9 or even 10 then your fine. The declared value is so you know which proper service level you have to send the card in for, and more importantly so that PSA can know how much shipping and insurance that your cards need to be sent back to you. A personal example is that I just sent in a large submission under the $12 Set Registry Special and one of the cards was a '57 Topps Pee Wee Reese. Well, my personal evaluation of the card was that it was probably a 7 or 8 but I didn't know, (I'm not a grader that's why I pay PSA all that money to do it for me image) so I declared the value on my form to be $85 which was the SMR for a 7 of that card. Well, I got my grades back and the card got a Mint 9 image and has a SMR of $1200 but I was totally fine on my submission for that service level. Hope that makes some kind of sense

Thanks guys. That makes sense. The two cards in question were an 84 Fleer Update Clemens and a 73 Topps Schmidt rookie. I just declared them at $100.

My hope is before they get bogged down with a bunch of cards in January, they post my grades and send my cards they got in November. Yuk!! image

While they're at it, they can send me a copy of the SMR I was suppose to get with my paid subscription. Really nice to talk that up as a $49 value and then not send them. Anyone else having problems receiving the magazine??

I don't think I'll send another order in until I get at least one of these two things delivered to my house.

    Shawn.
