Predicting centering on cello and/or rack packs?

When looking at cello or rack packs, do the top cards indicate subsequent centering on the remaining unseen cards? That is, do the card or cards that are visible (on top) correlate with the cards that are not visible (below)? I've always assumed so but I honestly do not really know. I am interested to hear your thoughts.

  • Not a pack expert, but I think the answer is yes, especialy on cellos. Check out how remarkably alike the centering is on these cards that came from a 1960 cello pack...

While there may be some truth to centering being consistent, this seller sells primarily PSA cards. That being said, 2 things are probably true.

    1. He doesn't grade OC material.
    2. He buys either unopened material and busts them, or buys wrappers.

Since OC cards have far less resale value than centered cards, this seller would be better off selling the OC cards ungraded. My thoughts are that he has a lot of product and realizes that his OC stuff would look more likely to come from the same pack if the centering was consistent.

I have busted packs that have had centering where all cards are the same, all cards but 1 or 2 the same, and all across the board.

I ask you this, if this seller buys unopened and busts them to look for well centered high grde cards, if the centering of all cards were the same as the top card, why would he buy a CELLO or RACK, with the top card(s) OC if he knew the cards underneath would follow suit? On the flip side, if he knew the cards under the top card were likely the same centering as the top, why would he bust open the pack? A 1960 unopened cello is worth far more than 12 OC cards from a newly opened cello pack.

There may be some cases where the cards do follow suit in cenetering to the top card, but not always. My advice would be to the OP, if all the cards on top of the rack are OC, if you can get it for a good price take a shot. If it goes too high, wait. Another one will be listed soon or at one of the next shows.
