2005 Silver Proof set is now sold out

Per the US Mint website, the 2005 Silver Proof set is now listed as "Product is not available."

This is much earlier than Silver proof set sellouts in past years.

I think there was something about sets, and singles, that have the new nickels, having to go offsale prior to 12/31/05 and the mint chose 12/25/05 as the last day they would sell.

So, I don't think these are technically "sold out" but rather that they are "unavailable for sale".

It's all the same in the end, except it doesn't show an increase in demand as being the cause for "no longer for sale".....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

It was the same thing with the 2004 proof set but they started selling them again once inventories were re-plenished and sold them almost up until the 2005 proof set was available. i.e. I bought my 2004 set in 2005.

True, but I think that maybe the Sate Quarters collectors who sat on their hands will realize that to keep their sets current, they'll need to go to the secondary market. I think the mintage will be lower than previous silver sets also. It seems that the best performing recent mint products are the ones that didn't have great demand while being sold by the mint. I'll be watching this one closely.

I see they finally put out a 2006 schedule!

  • This could be a good thing. The silver,6 coin nickel and mint rolls where not sell outs. This could drive prices up in the long run.The congress could give the mint the go ahead to dump the rest of these on the market.I hope they keep to the origanl legislation which said no nickel could be sold after 12-31-2005, for anything that had a westward nickel in it.

The reason the sets are no longer available has to do with the nickels; not an increase in demand for the sets themselves. They are not authorized to issue those nickels in 2006; so the Mint announced earlier that ALL products with the Westward nickels in them would no longer be sold as of December 25th.

There is still a legislative bill floating around that may authorize the mint to continue to sell products with the nickels in 2006, if passed. If it does pass, I do not know if the Mint will also allow more silver proof sets to be sold or not.
