For some reason, I couldn't get the top image in focus. I am just learning my way around my camera.

What do the top to bottom characters mean on the reverse?

The top character is "ho," an abbreviation for "hojo," or the Ministry of Finance. Some translate it as "Ministry of Taxation." It is the Choson equivalent of the Qing Board of Revenue. It is not Howard Johnson's, as some scholars have suggested. The Hojo was the government entity that minted the coin. The bottom character "dae" means "big", as I am sure you know. I am not sure why this character is here but it may have to do with the fact that this is a large denomination.

Could it be because Howard Johnson's is one of the largest foreign hotel chains in Korea (or perhaps the largest US hotel chain with Korean ownership in the US)?

Did it take you two and a half years to come up with that?

No. My eyes went bad and I could hardly read the screen, much less a book.

That's good to hear, BA. There are too many things yet to read.
