I almost got taken by this Spoof E-Mail, beware!

This one almost got me. Looks like an E-Bay question to seller E-Mail.

But I don't think these are E-Bays servers!!!

The threats alone would indicate a fake.

If it isn't in your My Ebay section, then it is a fake.

I searched for that auction number:

    Invalid Item

If the item was removed by eBay, please consider this transaction canceled. If anybody contacts you to complete the sale, please ignore the request. Completing the sale outside of eBay may be unsafe and will not be covered by eBay purchase protection programs.

  • I got one similar a few weeks ago, saying that I had not sent payment yet for some item I never heard of. As a rule of thumb, if I get ANYTHING from eBay or Paypal, I send it straight to spoof@eBay or spoof @Paypal.com. They will reply within minutes, usually telling you that this is a phishing email that was not sent by eBay. Once I sent them one that was legit and they responded that it was from them, so I answered that one. Also, as someone mentioned earlier, if it is from eBay it will show up in the "my messages" section on your my eBay page.

  • The first thing that tips it off as a fake is that it is missing this paragraph at the very beginning.

eBay sent this message to Micheal Schmidt (conder101).
Your registered name is included to show this message originated from eBay.

That first paragraph with your real name that you used when you registered on eBay and your current eBay handle must be there. A scammer can easily harvest eBay ID's but getting and linking them to your real registered name isn't as easy.

The use of somewhat stilted English (shall) is a giveaway. I received a somewhat similar message a few weeks ago and promptly deleted it.

It came from a coin doctor. Look at the server name:

I got the same type of email about a month ago. And I almost feel for it also. I just about clicked on the link to prove to myself that no, I didn't buy anything. But just before clicking, I remembered I hadn't bought anything on eBay now for 6 months, so it maybe could just be a scam. So even though you look out for scam emails, you may click on the link without thinking. This is one of the slyest ( most clever) email scams I have seen. Thanks for the tip!

Another thing to look for is that the mail only had the item number. If there is an item number e-bay usually has a partial item descriptions next to it.
