Just posted rare 1877-S seated dime variety upgrade at www.seateddimevarieties.com

No, the rare 1877-S variety is not an example with a Type I reverse.... That should make headlines in Coin World if a specimen ever appears.

Rather, I was really excited this morning when it was discovered that the MS 62 1877-S dime purchased out of the Bunker "Ohio Collection" was only the second F-111 example seen to date.

The first example, which only grades F15 because of weak reverse details, was located in 1992 within a small 1877-S hoard purchased from Harry Smith. Harry is an LSCC member and active part time dealer from CA. Many years passed as I tried to find an upgrade to better match the remainder of my 1877-S variety dimes. I've been trying to build the 14 coin variety set in consistent AU through low mint state grades. You can imagine the excitement this morning when I attributed the Bunker dime and discovered it was F-111. No one at home would understand why dad was so happy, so I am writing this post to share the excitement.

By the way, the lower grade F-111 specimen is for sale, just email me via the web-book address.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

So what are the attributes of an F-111 1877-S dime?

An F-111 variety is the die pairing of 1877-S Obverse 7 and Reverse C. There are 10 different obverse and reverse dies known for 1877 San Francisco coinage with 14 different die pairings.

Obverse 7 has a medium date that slopes upward and has complete (S)TATES and (O)F letters. Reverse C was weakly hubbed, lacking details in the lower left wreath and ribbon end. Also Reverse C has a Small Block S mintmark that is positioned slightly left as measured in the web-book. During variety F-111, Reverse C is in a late die state with denticle erosion and the details in the lower left wreath are nearly gone, probably polished away. This is why the F15 dime has a reverse that grades well below the obverse.

This coin was actually not a rip... it was a gift! I bought the dime out of the Bunker set on eBay as it looked like a nice 1877-S dime.

    Gerry,
Do you have any idea how many guys collect Seated Dimes by variety?

Do you have any idea how many guys collect Seated Dimes by variety?

I know of at least 8-10 individuals based on communications and direct sales. Bet that the actual number is 2x that when you consider those collectors who stay under the radar screen. The LSCC Top 100 Seated Dime Variety Survey in January will provide more insight on how many people have taken up the challenge.

    Gerry,

You piqued my interest with that one. Now I'm gonna have to check my Norweb MS65 1877-s dime for which variety it is.
Like you, I've always liked this "common" date along wit the 1876-s.
