Slight ebay glitch, barely caught it

put in an early low bid of $15.22 on this auction:
silver eagle
didn't pay attention to the confirm bid page amount, clicked
and i'm the high and only bid.
Problem: showed my proxy was $1,500.22
thought i had mistyped the amount, but used the back button to go back to
original page where i entered my amount and sure enough i had typed it correctly, $15.22
the confirm bid page amount did have the enhanced figure so by paying better attention
i could have avoided it before locking in my bid.
i did retract and rebid without a problem. Just to let everyone know to be aware and see
if it's happened to anyone else.

    Good catch.

Have you bought from this seller before? I don't like how he is keeping the bidder ID private....and for a "pre-sale" as well......

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • never bought from this seller before. the auction format does
have the private id which would normally keep me away but i didn't bid
enough to let a shill get me for any money. Well, at least i thought
    i hadn't.......
  • the seller does have a perfect feedback rating

this would have to have been an ebay problem.
noticed a few the last few weeks.
another one was kind of "mouse trapping" me on the
same page. I would hit back and page would reload but
    it was the same page.
then there was the no sign in day a week ago.
  • I've seen that problem from time to time too. I've noticed that if you enter you bid at the bottom of the page, instead of the top, you can avoid that. Don't ask me why, but it worked for me.
My humble '63 mint registry set, not much, but it's mine!
  • Shoulda just left it at what it was. Then You'd got the coin for sure.

These presale deals of graded coins are sleazy.

zuess, you hit the nail on the head. that is one thing i did different on this auction, hit the bid button on top of the page.......
didn't know if this is a one time event or something that happens more often.
  • The reason for these glitches is the URL generated by eBay is screwed up.

    image (should be maxbid=1522.00)

That would have been the URL you saw when the glitch showed up.

The maxbid= should have been 15.22 instead of 1500.22 (Should be 1522.00)

    EDITED

<< <i>User ID Action / Explanation Date of Bid and Retraction
private listing -- bidders' identities protected Retracted: US $1,522.00
Explanation: Entered wrong amount Bid: Dec-25-05 23:03:55 PST
    Retracted: Dec-25-05 23:07:21 PST
    >>

Is it possible you forgot a decimal point? eBay could still could have still generated the wrong URL to place the bid.

  • that was my first guess that i just typed in the wrong amount,
so i used the back button to get back to where i placed the bid to see it.
and the figure was typed properly with decimal points and all.
that's what kind of threw me, thought it was my mistake but
after investigating it had to be an ebay problem.
it was nothing in this case but could be baaad in a slightly
    different situation.
