Eagles and Falcons - played in the NFC Championship last season, now both out of the playoffs

The Eagles and the Falcons played in the NFC Championship game last season. Both teams didn't make it to the playoffs in this next season. Not sure how rare that is but it can't be too common for either team like this not to simply make it back to the playoffs, since the inception of the Super Bowl.

Philly's run was due to end...a team's window of opportunity can only stay open so long, and the Falcons have never had back to back winning seasons.
<< <i>the Falcons have never had back to back winning seasons. >>
what the hell does that have to do with the players this year?
the coaching has been bad in the past two games - the 3-1 and 4-2 runs with duckett in chicago sealed the loss, and the management with 1 minute 52 seconds on their own 16 in ot against the bucs - the falcons should have played for the tie and lived to die another day. also the defense has been suspect all year.
<< <i>Simply saying there's something inherently wrong with an organization that can't seem to put together winning seasons. And it's not like the Falcons haven't done this before...they go to the super bowl one year to a losing season the next. >>
Well I don't think the new GM, owner, and coach decided to lose this year after winning last year because of "history". I'm not going to play the injury card since all teams suffer injuries, but like I said earlier, the coaching has been shoddy. In 2004 everything about the Falcons was relatively new and caught defenses off-guard, whereas this year, the Falcons have been figured out (i.e Vick has ZERO TD passes to the right side of the field...) I believe the Falcons have lost all games when they were losing at halftime. Mora couldn't make adjustments.
And as much as it pains me, yes, the Falcons will not have a winning record this year. Carolina has much more to play for this week.
Are the Bucs special teams inherently wrong since in the history of the organization, they've never returned a kickoff for a TD?

Actually, yeah they do. Never returning a kickoff for a TD is just bad...and they had some years where they were getting a LOT of kickoffs.
They are also inherently BAD in cold weather games (what, one win in 40 something chances of 30 or below).
I didn't say they went out and lost games on purpose, but I can't help but think it might be more than coincidence the team's never put back to back winning seasons together (like the Bucs never getting a kickoff return for a TD...hell I don't think they've ever gotten one close).

Fair enough. I didn't start following football until '96 so I can't speak much for what the Falcons teams were like in the past. One thing about Atlanta is the city is full of bandwagoners - five years ago, the dome was a ghost-town, now it's the loudest place in the NFL.
There is something inherently wrong with dome teams. The '99 Rams being the only dome team to win the SB (which was played in a dome that year).
teams this year would blow both those teams away as would the 02 Bucs and 03 Panthers. 10-6 wins
your division last year, but it may not even get you into the playoffs this year.
Im not sure why people are yelling injuries when talking about the Eagles...the QB went down and the RB
went down....the bucs lost their starting QB for just as many games and Caddy was out too. People need
to realize that McNabb is not a championship QB. Westbrook will be gone and so will TO..then what is
left? The window has closed for the Eagles....other teams are just way better now.
I see two kinds of teams in the NFC now..those that play defense, and those that play offense. When is the last
team a super bowl winner didn't have a dominate defense??
Time to buy my Falcons shirt and get ready to root for them. I would like to thanks the cowgirls for an early
Xmas present

Unlike the Bucs (of which I am a fan), Griese is NOT the same caliber of player as McNabb...in your deluded fantasy world, joe, perhaps, but in this little place the rest of us call reality, there is no comparing the two.
The Bucs lost Caddy for a few games, the Eagles lost theirs for the season.
And last but not least, losing TO was a MASSIVE hit...there's no other WR in the league who has as much impact on a game. Yes, joe, that includes tampa. Tampa didn't have to deal with losing a WR of the likes of TO.
All teams have injuries, so quit whining about them joe.
not to mention a few offensive lineman, including center, some defensive tackles and a pro bowl corner ...
And Westbrook will not be gone, he signed a multi year deal .... I am optimistic that Moats and Westbrook will make a nice backfield next season. McNabb is a Championship caliber QB who just has not won the big one. He played great against New England - two of the picks were drops. I would take him over any QB in the NFC, so would Gruden and Parcells.
Last year's Eagles would bury this year's Bucs. The Bucs are an average team making the playoffs.
I would be surprised if it wasn't one and done for them in the playoffs this year. I do like the Caddy
though and their defense is decent (not great) but unless they win the division they are toast.
The Eagles lost 13 players for the season due to injury and mental illness this year. With McNabb,
Owens, and Westbrook healthy they could of won 10-11 games.
Even though the teams in the NFC had a better record than last year's playoff teams I am not convinced
this year's teams are that much better. I think the NFC got weaker and many of the teams with good
records are frauds. I think parity is very apparent in the NFC as any team could beat another team
on a given Sunday this year. This was not the case with teams like the Eagles and Falcons last year.
This year 5 of the 6 teams that made the playoffs in the NFC last year are eliminated now. Next year will be the
same story. Hopefully, the Eagles can improve and not count on getting people healthy as they are weak
in many areas. A few key ingredients could make them the class of the NFC again soon!

The Eagles had their shot and choked. The bucs went to the super bowl and won it all. The window has closed for the Eagles.
