TheRavenTheRaven Posts: 4,148 ✭✭✭✭
Barber people, I am looking at starting a quarter set to match my in progress Half set.....

The only store locally has one of these quarters in "VG-F" grade for $25.....

Now I have not heard of this coin before?

Any pictures or thoughts?

  • I think it's one of those minor die varieties, a repunched mintmark, where little extra value is given to the coin because of it. I'll have a better feel for this die variety after I receive my book, "The Authoritative Reference on Barber Quarters", by Kevin Flynn, for Christmas.

It's interesting, but probably not that popular. I have or had a BU coin that wasn't a huge premium over type.

In order for varieties to be valuable, there must be a demand. There may be a demand in the future for the d/d, but there is not much at present.

This is actually a rather neat variety, with the Large D typical of Barber quarters punched over the Small D that you see on 1911-D and later Cents, 1912-D and later nickels, 1916-D and later Mercury dimes and Walking Liberty halves and 1917-D and later Standing Liberty quarters. Apparently some engraver used that punch on a Barber quarter reverse, and then remembered or was reminded that they were still using the old punch on the Barber quarters. He then punched the Large D over the Small D.

I have been looking - somewhat haphazardly - to locate one in AU58. Not exactly laying around dealers showcases.
