Freelance Sports Writers Wanted (PAID)

As some of you may know, I am launching a new tv show, dvd line and website tied to the sports memorabilia industry, all under the banner of THE BULLPEN. I am looking for freelance writers (paid) to contribute to the site when we relaunch in the spring.

If anyone would like to "try-out" for one of the slots, please post your best work on the message baords at www.theBullpen.com and shoot me an email to let me know you are interested. I will be picking about 10-12 people to contribute to the site.

You would need to commit to a weekly piece on any subject focused on sports, not necessarily exclusive to the hobby and no particular sport is necessary. In fact, less covered sports like soccer, hockey, olympics, etc are definitely encouraged. Rants and Raves are fine but they must be cohesive arguments in support or opposition of something.

If you have any questions, please email me jph@thebullpen.com. MESSAGE BOARD

  • It's spam because I'm offering people a chance to further promote the hobby and get paid for what they otherwise give away free? That's confusing.

  • that's an interesting site, but building up a message board community is not what this is about. I am an experienced tv veteran doing a nationally syndicated television show on the sports memorabilia hobby. the corresponding site is looking for writers who know what they are talking about for the day to day coverage of the sports world and for quarterly review in our newsletter. as you can guess, given the niche nature of this hobby, you can't just hire someone who has a B.A. in English, it requires people entrenched in the hobby.

if you are interested, we welcome you to submit samples of your writings. if you are not interested, we hope you will check us out on occasion and look for the show when it airs. thanks.

Mining your talent pool from an anonymous message board sounds like an incredibly sound and lucrative business plan. I'm sure you've got those know nothing Hollywood moguls eating out of your hand. I want to send you a million dollars as a premier shareholder - whom do I make the check out to?

Regardless of what you think of thebullpen's true intent (selling memorbilia?) I wouldn't mind seeing some type of mass media exposure for our hobby. It seems that all we get is company press releases, profiles of big ego collectors, and auction news. For a hobby market that is probably well over $250 million, that is pathetic.

The TV idea is interesting, but I don't think the main players in this business are telegenic (Kit Young? Fritsch Jr?). Plus I don't see enough material that would justify 30 min on TV, unless it became a shill show for the manufacturers and dealers. A radio show may be better. I live in Detroit, which has a huge collecting base, and I am surprised none of the sports radio shows have a collectors show or even a 10 minute segment.

I gotta disagree - I don't see the need for regularly scheduled national media coverage of this hobby - it would have to be self serving and directionless except to sell some sort of product. It's been tried, and it failed. I can't think of a single approach to collecting that would generate the kind of income to stay on the air that would not, in the end, be self serving advertising for some marketed product.

Bullpen - I think this may be a farce. If you seriously want some replys, set up your PM.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

    Bull

We get spammed all the time and one can expect incredulous rhetoric. The request for freelance writers may, by some, look like a thinly veiled ploy to promote your own personal needs.

If you have a good product and reach one person here - "internal marketing" will take over - one will tell two and two will tell four.

E.g. BBCExchange is a really good company - once word got out, coupled with a little help he offered one of our members - and the rest is ancient history.

But, ya gotta have thick skin to make it thru this crowd - and I wish you all the luck in the world!

    Merry Christmas

  • Phenomenal site, BBCExchange. Thanks for the tip, Stone. I just added it to my links section, which for all you naysayers is a "non-denominational" links page... no one corporate bent, no specific types of cards. Anyone can add any link they want that involves/promotes the hobby or any business within it.

I encourage all of you to submit your own or favorite dealer links to that part of the site as we aim to build the largest link directory on the web.

    The Bullpen Links Directory

    Thanks.

PS Stone, I've spent 15 years in Hollywood, a few negative guys won't get me down but I appreciate the ray of positivity you shine.

    Bull
Nothing personal, since I haven't a clue who are. Which is exactly the deal. Without blowing our own horn, we here on this board represent, with a few notable exceptions, the cream of the card collecting world. You wouldn't believe how often we are scammed with comeons. If I were courting interest from a group such as us, I would be much more hat-in-hand.

At the end of the day, any TV show on sports memorbilia would become a shill show for the card/memorbilia companies and big dealers. Look at those car shows on Spike TV, they may as well be 30 minutes ads for parts companies.

There is nothing wrong with that, but at least the car shows actually teach you something about putting on the parts. I'm not quite sure what a sports memorbilia show could teach me.
    Mike
  • We'll be putting up the teaser trailer on our website after the holidays, but what I can tell you is the difference between cars and cards is there are people behind the cards- the athletes, and with people come stories... and stories are what make good television.

THE BULLPEN SHOW is purely an entertainment product, no corporate shilling at all.

As for the week to week movements within the industry, I think Beckett and Tuff Stuff do a fine job there, no need to recreate the wheel, and I don't think that information has enough broad based appeal to bring in people who don't collect.

And to hat in hand guy... I'm giving someone a chance to participate in a great project at an early stage, and get paid for it. I think you miss the point entirely.

I have no clue what bullepen is up to but the Trader Speaks show is the biggest shill for Upper Deck that can be found. They take about ten calls in an hour and anyone who mentions an autograph is advised to have their autograph verified by Upper Deck. It is an hour of a UD infomercial. They wouldn't know the rookie card of 75% of players out there. They do hype everything from 1992 going forward. Save your time and get an extra hour sleep rather than to listen to that garbage.
