What year did the ASE PF boxes change color???

I have 1994 in dark blue and 93 and earlier are in purple. Did 1995 come both ways???

Many thanx.

Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy Holiday season.

I believe they have changed colors two times, each time they changed the mint that produced them.

San Francisco produced them originally, then Philly and now West Point.

I don't recall the exact year that the mint changed, but it seems that the box color changed each time

They changed when they changed mints, 94 from Purple to Blue and again in 2000 when they went to Green (I think it is green, for West Point).

('95 were blue. The '95 W only came with the 4 piece gold set)

  • Hi Julian,
I apologize for getting back to your thread so late. I intended to reply sooner but traveling and holiday duties kept me away.

I am not only a US coin collector but also US Mint packaging collector. So, to me, a set is worth the most when it has the original box(es) and paperwork - just like it was released originally. As a side-effect of my collecting tendacies, I'm not only interested and research into the coin but also what came with it.

So, to your question of packaging of the Proof SAE's.

The 1986-1992 SAE's were minted at San Francisco and packaged in a purple display case and purple outer box. The COA had a photo of the SAE on the front and sort-of a plain look to it.

The 1993 SAE was minted at Philadelphia and was packaged in two ways. Either 1) the previous purple display case, purple outer box and COA or 2) packaged in the new dark blue display case with a new dark, dark blue (almost black) outer box. The new COA has a gray-colored printed likeness of the SAE and a little fancier than the older ones. I presume the packaging/COA differences were due to the transition from San Francisco to Philadelphia.

The 1994-2000 SAE's were minted at Philadelphia and had the new dark blue display case with a new dark, dark blue (almost black) outer box. The new COA has a gray-colored printed likeness of the SAE and a little fancier than the older ones. This is all identical to the option 2 packaging for the 1993 SAE.

The 2001-2003 SAE's were minted at West Point and had the same dark blue display case but had a lighter blue outer box than the one used before, although it was still dark blue - just not as dark. The COA was still the same as the one used between 1994-2000. One more thing started happening - the Mint started putting a bar-code sticker on the bottom of the outer box.

The 2004 SAE was also minted at West Point and had the same display case and outer box but the COA changed. They put a large cursive S on the front in a gray color and started to get really fancy with the inside graphics.

The 2005 SAE was also minted at West Point and had the same display case and outer box but the COA changed again, but only in the large cursive S on the front and the paper they used. The large cursive S on the front is a shiny silver color and the paper is a heavier, thicker bond in a matte texture.

Well, there you go. All you wanted (and didn't want) to know about the packaging of the proof SAE's. Hope it helps. Some might wonder why someone would keep up with such trivial details...well, when someone tells me (as a collector) that something is original, I want to have my own information to verify that it is. Have fun.

  • I was about to answer, glad I saw Tanner's reply explaining everything in depth image

I have to admit (gladly image) that I don't know the packaging that in-depth, but I did know the 2 changes in color, between 93 and 94 and 2000 and 2001 image

  • I'm glad I could contribute something like this to this forum. It's not a heavily focused area of numismatics but I get a kick out of it. Besides, with others just as "knowledgably indepth" in their areas of collecting, it makes it where the pool of information on any subject exhaustive - so that you can find out just about anything. I know I've learned tons and tons from this forum. image
