Cheap Breen Encyclopedia on eBay

Not my book, but someone should be able to get a pretty good deal on an exceptionally important reference.

Yep, the "must have" book for every collector of American coins ..... just don't always take his rarity comments too seriously. A real shame how Walter went out.

Tell that to all the young boys he molested. Walter Breen got what he deserved. The hell with him and his book.image
  • Whoever buys it needs to get a big bottle of Elmers glue. The pages fall out of these books.

thanks for the link, Pistareen. it sure didn't take long for it to go south, but i've gotten used to that around here.

    Ray:

Interesting to read your comments regarding the Breen encyclopedia. I though I was the only one who had that problem. Great content - poor package. The book binding simply falls apart.

All points about the Breen Encyclopedia true. It is an indespensible reference for any numismatic library but consider it a loose leaf text. Much criticism has been placed for inaccuracies on rarity and the text has been superceeded by specialty books in several areas yet this book remains was one of the greatest contributions to US numismatics of all time.
BTW, this time of the year is meant to find goodness in each other, forgiveness for those that have sinned and a postive look to the future.

Thanks for the head's up on the book. I have one, but I don't use it nearly as much as I do my specialty references that I have. Maybe I should use it more than I do.

Maybe not that cheap. The snipers will probably drive it well over $60 by the time it ends. And yes, get a large bottle of glue. You'll need it to keep the pages in there.

I don't think the "shame" reference was to Breen getting something he didn't deserve. I think it probably just meant it was a shame that his life turned the way it did, damaging the lives of some boys and arguably devaluing his work in the eyes of some.

I really don't think it was implied that he was a victim.

Precisely. The guy was a genius but also a complete mess. He made a great name for himself but wrecked the lives of young boys and ruined his ex-wife in court for his abuses. A sick and sad story to be sure. He could have gone out as a man or enormous respect.

The binding is 1000 times better than the VAM, no disrespect to the authors.
