Quick Morgan Dollar Variety Question! Photos!

Hey all,
Sorry for the blurry photos... These are probably nothing, but I thought I'd check. image

1: Pcgs ms64 1887 Morgan: The first 8 in the date in its "Left Notch" is filled, you can see the outline of it in the close-up photo. (First 3)

2: NGC ms64 1886: Does this look like a small strike through error? (Last One)

Thanks,
SM

The last picture shows a clash mark of the back of libertys hair and cap to the right of the eagles wing.
  • Is that Good? Is this type of thing considered a vam?
    Thanks,

Here is a picture I made showing an overlay of the obverse on the reverse of a Morgan that might let you picture what is going on easier.

There are some VAMS with clash marks. Some I am aware of show a part of the n of the "In God" showing on libertys neck right where an adams apple would be if she was a he and some have a faint part of the st of trust showing in the area of the lower hair vee of liberty. These are sometimes visible on the obverse of heavily clashed Morgans. On the reverse look for a faint E from the E in libertys headband showing under the eagles left tail feathers. If any of these letters are visible due to a clash, they are worth some premium and are VAMS. That's all I know to look for, I'm kinda new at VAMS image
  • Do you have a picture like that for the Peace $?

No, but I can make one pretty easy. I don't have a clashed Peace to use as a template, but I can simply overlay them in normal coin orientation with the reverse upside down on the obverse. Give me a minute or 2.

How's this? If you have a photo of the obverse and reverse of an actual clashed Peace I can make a better one because I wcan line up the clash mark to the actual device that caused it.

  • I went over the whole reverse and did find 2 more clashes for a total of 3, but so far no letters.
Here is a photo of the areas of the clashes (outlined in red).
    What do ya think?
    Thanks,
    SM

P.S. Thanks for the info, I learn something new everyday! image

Yeah, the red shows where the clashes would be. So you didn't find any on the obverse? Mine has some stuff going on on both the front of the neck and in the lower hair vee, not sure if it is enough to be able to say they are any parts of letters though and no clash VAMS listed for the date mm in the books that i've looked at. I thought it might be some kind of VAM when I bought it though image . Still not sure.

The 1886 Morgans are notoriously clashed. Some are more interesting than others with the 3+2 clash VAM-1C (not what you have) bearing a premium. It is a great date to study clashing with. The 1887 Morgan very commonly has the die chip between the loops of the first 8, maybe around half of them have that. Good eye though.
