SGC grading certified autos at Express level

Thought some of you might be interested to know that SGC will grade pre-1998 certified autographed cards at their $10 Express level service. Contacted their customer service rep today and he gave me the info. I know that both PSA and BGS charge substantially more to do this, though I am not sure exactly how much more.

Not shilling for SGC here, just thought some of you with early '90s certified autos like Donruss Elites might want to save some money.

I simply e-mailed the Customer Service Manager, Scott Hersh.

Both PSA and BGS charge a premium for these cards, though I have never understood why. I mean, what is the difference between a certified auto from 1992 (on which they DO charge a premium) and one from 2002 (on which they DO NOT charge a premium)?

In some cases, though I'm not sure in all cases, the cards prior to 1998 had nothing to distinguish them as being autographed from their non-autographed counterparts. Not sure about BGS, but in PSA's case they go through PSA/DNA first, which is the reason for the extra charge. I know with Pro Line football autos they had a stamp (embossment), but I don't recall if the early Upper Deck insert autos (Namth, Montana, Reggie Jackson, Ted Williams etc) had anything identifying them from the non-signed versions. I assume SGC is authenticating these pre-1998 autos in some way. Did they say?
