Bad Luck with Auctions I Thought I Won!

Talk about bad luck....last week I won a 1959 PSA 9 card at a very good price but my joyfullness was short lived. The next day I got an e-mail stating that the card was accidentally listed twice and unfornately I won the second listing. My sorrow was somewhat lessoned when the seller offered me a $25 credit toward my next purchase. I checked and sure enough the same card had been listed twice. Now this week I won a nice 1977 Seaver-Ryan at a good price in PSA 9 and I received this e-mail:

"Hi, I am unable to sell the above card. I dropped & broke the plastic holder and damaged the card while getting ready for the auction to ed about 30 minutes ago. I was hoping to get on & stop the auction, but it had ended by the time I could sign on. I apologize for any inconvience this may cause. Thank you."

Now, this seller has great feedback so I can certainly believe this could have happened. Is it just that I am having bad luck here (I have won thousands of auctions and never had this happen before) or is it fairly common for auction winners to actually not be auction winners. Has this happened to anyone else on the message boards?

The second one sounds awfully suspicious. I've dropped my fair share of PSA cards, especially when I used to set up at shows and I've NEVER broken a case. I had one chip off on a corner once but that's it. Sounds to me like an offline offer came in or the price wasn't up to par for the seller. It is possible the case broke, but I doubt the card was hurt at all.
  • Well, I have to admit I have been on the other end of it.

I have bid on and won auctions of cards that I have already had in my sets. I would inadvertly look at a wrong line or miss the card entirely in my spreadshseet.

In pretty much all the cases, the seller is very decent enough to keep, relist or offer the card that I accidently won to the 2nd high bidder. In all cases though, I do tell them that if they think I am being insincere I would still gladly pay for the card and my error.

Sorry to hear that story. I like playing poker so I would just tell him no big deal. Just reduce the price and I will take the card as is. See how he responds then.
