  • Funny you should say, this thread was originally about Barry Halpers passing, which was duplicated soon after by another thread. Nevertheless, I dont think a doctor is required at this point in time.

On a side note, it appears you've finally found your white whale Mel Parnell PSA 7. Congrats!

Let's see the freakin' Parnell. Give us the detail. Did you bend over and pay a ridiculous price or was it the beautiful feeling of a raw submission?

Or did you simply kick everyones ass in a straight up ebay battle?

    edit - You rock.

  • Thanks Envoy and Sagard.

It’s been a long journey. I didn’t want to write anything more and jinx myself until I actually got the card. I wasn’t able to pay by Paypal and even though the dealer was reputable I guess I couldn’t believe I was finally getting it. I thought something would conspire to keep me from getting it. This is the 3rd Parnell I have seen in the five years I have been watching eBay. I would check eBay religiously on a daily basis, usually multiple times. Then I would check all the other stores out there that I have saved in my favorites (about 15), then I would google (or yahoo or excite before that). I would put up messages I thought would flag if someone out there had a Parnell to sell. I harassed Brian Wentz at the Toronto sport card expo on a couple occasions about when he would find me one, which on both occasions he talked about the SGC 92 he sold a few years back. He remembered my email I sent too, lol!. I know Greg from Cameo Cards knew about my obsession too just this year. I’m still curious what the Parnell came back as that you had in for grading Greg.

The funny thing about this Parnell card is that it always had a funny time of popping up at the most inopportune time. The first time it came up on eBay I had just moved out west, and had absolutely no money to spend. This was my first schooling in the Parnell eBay free for all in the last thirty seconds of the auction. I was really heartbroken.

I waited a couple more years for another one to come up on eBay, and this time it was an 8, right after I married my wife and had no money once again. She allowed me to bid knowing how important the card was to my eventual inner peace. I had my finger ready to press the left button of my mouse for $2850 in the last few seconds (more than double the PSA 8 SMR) and was down to about 10 seconds and smiling very much knowing I had finally brought home the big one when the %^*%($ thing goes to something in the neighborhood of 9 thousand. To make it worst I had my two closest friends watching on their side of their computers. I didn’t even get a chance to bid.

This third time it came up in a PSA7 I was in Toronto for a three day conference, right around Christmas. Great, no money again. I knew I was going to have to snipe big on this one especially when I saw Ronnieb316, a guy who will usually win what he wants in the 50 Bowman irregardless of the cost.

I get to the Hotel the first night and spend countless hours with my companies tech support to figure out why my laptop wasn’t connecting to the internet. Useless! I call the front desk of the Royal York, and find out their internet kiosks close at 10pm. Great, the auction ends at 10:18pm. I decided to take no chances and drove about an hour outside of Toronto to get to my cousins where I could bid in peace. I think I nearly had a heart attack those last few seconds; I was waiting for the thing to skyrocket in the last 10 seconds. I sat with my bid of 1800 and executed it with 6 seconds left sealing my victory.

Here is the link to the auction: 1950 Bowman Mel Parnell PSA 7 EBay Auction

I can’t really say that the Robinson is quite like the Parnell, most of the cards in the set come up to varying degrees in different places from time to time. This was the big one for me for this set and it’s great to relax a bit now.
