I never knew of or even heard of this man before. I mean no disrespect when I say that. I just had a thought though when I read the link. I thought wow we spend alot of time pursuing certain things such as cards we really want or "need" for our collections or gathering tons of memorabilia but in the face of eternity its all meaningless.
I remember seeing pictures in some sports card magazines of his collection, jerseys lined up on racks, baseballs and other memorbilia all over the place, was quite a site.
A friend of mine did electrical work in his house and was shown his collection. Amazing. If I remember correctly he installed pushbuttons that open a door to a display and turn on a spotlight to it. I think also a tracked system similar to a dry cleaning shop that displayed jersey's. I'm sorry to hear this news.
Actually, I believe he made his money in the Janitorial Supply or Paper Supply business (I know he wasn't a lawyer). Regarding his ownership of the Yankees, the statement I liked best is when I read that there "is nothing more Limited in the world as being a Limited Partner of the New York York Yankees"
Successful dealings with Wcsportscards94558, EagleEyeKid, SamsGirl214, Volver, DwayneDrain, Oaksey25, Griffins, Cardfan07, Etc.
There was an article about Mr. Halper and his collection in Cigar Aficionado in 1997. That is what really got be back into collecting. He will be greatly missed in the community.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason. Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason. My Pirates Collection
Halper had his fans and those who didn't care for his "approach" to the hobby.
It's at this time of year that emotions are felt more acutely.
I lost my dad in December of 79. I still miss him to this day.
I would like to say a prayer for the family and friends of Mr Halper and all those out there who have been in any way badly affected by what life sends our way.
And on a positive note - wish everyone a Merry Christmas! mike

My deepest regrets go out to his family.
His collection was outstanding.
But in the end, he will stand naked before god.
Like each one of us.
your wordly treasures will be meaningless.
I truly hope and pray he was as good at laying treasures up in heaven,,,, as he was here on earth.
IMO.
