Profanity laced tirade Off topic!!

I live in a pretty small midwest town, less than 8k people. I can't go to the store or gas station or Wal-mart without running into a couple of people I know. Seems like a great place to live. Plus, the Colts are here, what could be better?

My wife gets up early every morning to run, and her sister comes over to go with her. Now I had a busy day planned this morning, my boy had a 8 a.m. basketball game and my girl had an 11 a.m. basketball game, so things were going to be hectic as it were. However, after the morning jog from 6 to 6:30 this morning, my wife and sister in law comes home to find my sister in law's car was stolen!!.

Stolen!! Right out of my phucking driveway in the middle of small town u.s.a.!! Nothing pi$$es me off more than when someone steals something from you. My son's bike was stolen off our front porch about six weeks ago and that was bad enough. But now a car?? And an escort at that!! Some piece of $hit going to send an escort to a chop shop for another hit of meth? For crying out loud!!

To make matters worse, my wife is now scared to death. Looks like ADT will be here monday to secure my house to the gills, fearing it might be the next "hit". Like that won't cost me. At least I can sleep knowing my PSA's are secure?? Bull$hit stealing pieces of trash!!!

If only i'd been cleaning my Glock instead of sleeping in like a lazy turd.............

well of course. I didn't say my sister in law was smart.

in reality, i know A LOT of people around here who leave keys in their cars and their houses unlocked. It's just the way it is....or was, around here.

that being said, i hope you don't try to justify the crime because keys were left in the car. There wasn't a sign on the window that said "please steal me" to go along with the keys.image

Sorry, I know how you feel. I've been hit twice in the last 6 months on my property! Sux!

No that was not my thinking. with that said, I believe it was a simple crime of opportunity (kids) and that I was trying to understand how if the house was protected by ADT the car (with keys left inside) would not have been stolen.

I should have made this clear in my first post. I wonder who if anyone could justify anything being stolen simply because a door was ;eft unlocked or keys left in an ignition. Stealing is wrong and to imply that I would somehow justify it is pure folly.

Yep - unfortunately I believe you're right...for drugs, or to payoff gambling debts. Most likely one or the other.

It stinks, but there is not any reason to let yourself get so bent out of shape, stuff happens. No one died or was injured, your sister in law can get a different car which is kept locked when she's not in it, you can get your kid a new bike with a lock, you can get your home wired to make you feel more secure and move on with things.

There have been thieves since the beginning of life and will always be. Some people have been stealing for so long that it is the only life they know and become dependent on it for any number of reasons, drugs being one of course. All you can do is take the appropriate actions to try to prevent it, and you carry insurance in case it actually does happen.

Physical items & money can always be replaced.
  • We now have two good reasons to live in Florida.

The first of course is the weather.

The second is that by law we can now shoot someone for no apparent reason other than that we feel our lives are threatened.

I see someone in my car, they get a cap in their a$$. image
  • It's hard to imagine there are still places where people feel comfortable leaving houses unlocked and cars with keys in them. Please forgive my incredulity but I grew up and live in Sounthern California and feeling so secure with anything like that seems reckless. I do feel bad for you taking the hit in the wallet tho for ADT, I was always of the opinion that they were the ones who robbed the houses to get people interested in home security. It still just boggles my mind feeling so safe somewhere that you could do things like that. Please don't take this the wrong way but the facrt that places like that still exist is amazing to me. No wonder the wife keeps talking about wanting to move to the mid-west. Best of luck to your sister-in-law on recovery of the car - hope she was insured.

I grew up in LA with helicopters over head by night, alarm set on the house, car stereo stolen 5 times before graduation from high school... so I think you should be happy you live in such a relatively safe place that you can (or could) leave keys in the car. Maybe don't do that anymore but otherwise you probably live in a great place!
P.S. Oh ya, I am sorry because I too have had way too much stuff taken over the years. It is one of the worst feelings. On the bright side maybe you put some toys under the tree for that criminal's family!? image

We have a security system on our house. Doors and all the windows secured. I have two little girls and another baby on the way and the system really does give us "peace of mind". With all the sick child molesters and theifs out there you never know when someone might try and pay you a visit. So it really is a plus to have one and it only costs about $40.00 a month.

Good tip if you can qualify for USAA (military) you can get ADT for $22.99 a month. Sweet deal!

FWIW, I think everyone who lhas an emotional reaction to having stuff stolen (and I count myself in this group, so don't think I'm being condescending) would be well served to read 'The Golden Sayings of Epictetus'; or,, for that matter, the works of any of the more notable stoics (Marcus Aurelius for instance). There are a few passages in 'The Golden Sayings' that really put theft in perspective.

BigRedMachineUnhappyDude - life stinks and then you die. Did they steal any of your PSA 10 Mantle's? I've had all kinds of stuff stolen over the years - my car, my wallet, my job and even my dignity.

Live to see another day and post this kind of crapola over on the open forum.

as far as keys left in the car....just saw a local news segment on this very topic. i didn't realize this, but in TN, it is against the law to leave your keys in the car while it is running (i.e. warming your car due to weather). local police have been writing citations at apartment complexes around the nashville area.

    Thanks,

I feel your pain! My '68 Camaro was stolen in high school, a car that I had spent dozens if not hundreds of hours working on myself. Stolen out of the parking lot of my work in an fairly upscale part of KC. No keys in the car, they just hotwired it. The police found the car that night, the police filled it full of bullets, the thief flipped the car, there were no seat belts in the car, and the police still didn't catch the guy!

Agreed. Any conservative estimation on the net value of cash and material goods that have been wrested from me over the years-- and this includes bad debts as well as brazen theft--will easily exceed five figures.

There is, however, something almost endearingly virginal about grown men who get worked up in a lather over larceny-- if only because it confirms, in a roundabout way, that nothing really bad has ever happened to them. That's not to say nothing tragic has befallen them-- the death of a parent, say, or a painful divorce-- but it does suggest an unfamiliarity with anything overtly malicious and utterly random. I can't, for instance, imagine someone who lived through the Kamer Rouge working themselves into a state of moral outrage over the theft of an insured car.

If the car had sentimental value, that is very bad. It sounds like you are just upset that someone had the gall to just take something that was not theirs. Morally very very wrong, but that is what insurance is for.

What is worse: theft or vandalism? they are both very intrusive to our private space. I can understand someone being angry about getting their personal space violated.

On the flip side, I have found a lot of things left behind in crowded areas and gyms and I always return that kind of stuff to lost and found. I am talking about things like jewelery and check books. People will notice they are missing it. I want to make sure people realize that there are some good people out there watching their backs too. We all know of people who steal things for various reasons, but we should not forget those that rightfully return things to people as well.

Perry, finally a voice of reason. All I said in my initial post was I was pi$$ed.

DirtyHarry, sorry if I offended you with my initial post. When someone type in OT in the title, it means it's off
topic and might not be about cards. Of course, you know that. So if you don't want to read it move on. I
certainly don't litter these boards with off topic material and have been around long enough for a LITTLE respect, so cut me a break. Just wanted to share a story with my "friends" on these boards.

BooPotts, I agree this wasn't a tragedy and wasn't asking for sympathy or a pity party. I was mad. And I
didn't try to compare my loss to that of a real tragedy. I know it wasn't. I live in small town USA and realize this world isn't a Utopia, but maybe if more people would give a $hit instead of saying "it happens", it would be a little better.

My security system gets installed Friday Lawnmowerman. I wasn't really concerned with someone breaking in, but my wife wants the "peace of mind" you're referring to.

By the way Boo, nice sig line. I wonder what you could compare the "Double Douche" to? Sam Elliott was my favorite in that movie.

    Merry Christmas all
    Shawn.
