Hypothetical #4 - Extra coin in the roll at auction

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,355 ✭✭✭✭✭
Suppose you're at an auction there's a lot catalogued as a "roll of 20 Krugerrands". You buy it. When you count it later, you find 21 coins in the roll. Do you return the extra coin?

I'll bet you would change your tune if there were only 19 coins in the roll.

  • I would return it, just as I did on my way home from the Baltimore show when I bought a cheesedog at the airport from Nathan's and they charged me only for a regular hot dog.

Now, the cheese dog was absolutely disgusting, but I insisted that they correct the mistake and charge me for the additional 40 cents.

I am just wicked honest, I guess.

I would have returned half the cheese dog, complained about how disgusting it was, and demanded a refund. (I'd refuse a cheeseless replacement because "I've lost my appetite!") Then, I'd have a friend use the refund money to buy me another delicious cheese dog.

If I were buying a roll of gold I would certainly have cracked the roll there and counted them before I left.

Maybe your underbidder noticed the extra coin and bid accordingly. In that case, you paid a competitive price for 21 coins. Are you sure you want to return the coin?

As far as I'm concerned, anything purchased at AUCTION is yours to keep, even if the cataloger made a cataloging error. I don't care if it's a misattribution, an undergraded coin or an extra coin in a group lot. It's the nature of the game. Don't feel bad. In the end, a room full of bargain hunters serves the auctioneer and consignor well, even if there's an occasional bargain.

Edited to say that I am completely serious. Except with respect to the cheese dog. I'm a vegetarian.

R U NUTS!!!!!!! its your bonus for buying like when you go to kfc and get 10 pcs for an 8 pcs meal "o the joy"image
  • I agree with MrEureka on this one, too.
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.
  • Floor bidders have no return privledges. Sorry, you'll have to keep it. image

Oh, you're a mail bidder, well in that case you you can return it if there was a serious error in the description or in the case of authenticity. The description said a roll and there was a roll so you can't return for that reason, and there is no claim that it isn't real so we can't return for that reason. And of course the auction house doesn't split lots so you would have to return all or none. image

Same sort of scenario as the 1911-D Quarter Eagle hypothetical question. You don't buy coins without checking. What if the roll contained 2 krugerrands and lead slugs. The wieght on a scale would have been wrong but somebody who doesn't check what he/she is buying doesn't go around with a portable scale either.

Buying and selling coins is a matter of competence, experience and savvy behavior.

As far as the extra Krugerrand is concerned, it should be returned. It's a matter of ethics.

Ethics seem to have fallen by the wayside in some of these posts that seem to espouse the concept of "finders keeps losers weepers".

    Is it a dealer roll?

A "dealer's roll" always comes with 21 coins. Dealers do this to make their customers happy. Everybody knows that. image

Is that like a baker's dozen?

See my answer in hypothetical #2. Basically the same thing. Why didn't the dealer simply weigh the roll before he/she sold it. Maybe the South African mint made the miscount. The coin should be returned to the company or person who originally made the error.

Keep it. There's no way of telling how far back the chain of error goes & the seller obviously is unaware of the extra coin. So I would be confident that the seller didn't
pay for it either. May as well break the chain of error.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
