my first crackout..

I know this is old hat for you guys, but this was my first....
not a great coin, but I really wanted it out of that slab..and in an airtite in my album with the rest of my (common date) early US gold since I didn't have a $5 yet...

I felt like I was freeing a living breathing thing from a cage/state of suspended animation, and maybe it was my imagination (or the shard of plastic lodged deep in my right eyeball), but I think Mr. Indian actually WINKED at me image in appreciation !!!

ok...it's only F-EF?, but it's an MS-65 in my heart.

But don't kid yourself, that is a circulated half eagle, holder or no. It is a very nice circulated Indian $5, but it is what it is.

    I like it. image

Lucky you image.... the 1913 I sent to PCGS which was about MS61 came back counterfeit and sits in the classroom of the ANA in Colorado.

yours is perfect for an album, but it is also one of the more common dates used for counterfeiting. That is the main reason I would leave it in a slab by NGC, ANACS, PCI, or PCGS. .... just for the authenticity of the piece image

good point, I bought it as a type piece, and was confident because of the purchaser and the slab.

this brings a question, the first counterfeit coin I bought was a $5 a long time ago on ebay, it was slightly larger than it should have been
and might have been a touch lite. (I brought it to a dealer-friend who agreed it wasn't genuine)

I returned it for a refund. now, I have a palmscale and very good caliper to measure the coins, and good picture catalogs. do you typically check your coins to that degree ? IE did your 1913 measure up ? (I know more experienced ppl can just handle a coin and gauge it's "right" size, im not implying that you're careless with your purchases)...

Im just trying to figure out how best to protect myself. Ive got some education, some tools, and a very very nice, patient dealer who I can talk to when I need to... just trying to figure how they "got" you... I mean, it could have just been an excellent fake..
