how does lelands auction work?

I was out tonite but posted an "not present" bid for a case of 1980 topps rack packs. Is the only way to bid on these auctions using that drop down menu or can you specify how much over the current bid you want to raise?

Or to win auctions do you simply have to be prepared to bid 2 or 3x the actual selling price of item to knock out other bidders?
