Would this be too risky...

to buy this and hope to crossover it to a psa10? Anyone with GAI card experience please elaborate.
Thanks

I think it has a great chance at a 10.

    What's the value of a 10?

I always wonder if it was a PSA 9 to start with and they said "Think this would cross to a 9.5?" lol
It is a sweet card and very tempting though.

It might take a few times before they grade it a 10. Good luck breaking it out 3 or 4 times.

Too risky at that price. Besides, I don't think it would sell for that much in a regular auction. GAI just isn't known that well among modern collectors. Their 10's create a stir, but 9.5's usually don't go for huge premiums.

If you could get it for substantially less cash, I was thinking you could ask Beckett to cross it at a show and request a minimum grade of a 9 with subs that are ".5 away." A BGS 9 with those kinds of subs could probably go for close to a grand, and of course a 9.5 would sell for over three grand.

There's a slim outside chance but in my opinion basically a bad gamble. Wouldn't a dealer such as this already have tried that?

You would think, but that's not always the case. Especially if the dealer has burned a few bridges with PSA.

In any case, that's a beautiful example of an '81 Montana rookie. One of the best I've ever seen.

I think Allen has it right. Crack it, and you are back to a PSA 9, and out at least $600. No thanks.

  • I had success cracking and crossing a GAI 9.5 into a PSA 10. Bought the GAI 9.5 for $300. Sold the PSA 10 for $500.

But, I also paid $240 for a GAI 9.5, and tried 2 times to get it into a PSA 10, and both times they were returned as 9s. The second time, something happened in the sealing process, and one of the corners get bent. I sold that card for $100, and saw it again two weeks later on eBay (I think he got $5 more for it than me).

I have had success a BGS 9.5 in holder crossover to PSA 10. I have tried that two other times, with results yet to be determined (the two are a BGS 9, and a SGC 98).

Nice card, nonetheless. Not an option to keep it where it is for your personal collection (perhaps sell later)?
