Gallery Coin Company?

I was doing a search on ebay and stumbled across this auction. Anyone here ever
heard of this company?

  • Well this one is interesting because it says Gallery Coin Company. Usually they say Gallery Grading Company. I've written about them here several times whan someone rediscovers them.

This company strarted out using a generic slab shell but almost immediately switched to these homemade slabs. Frankly I can't understand this company since it would cost way more to make these homemade slabs than to use the generic shells. These slabs are thre layer plexiglass, glued together, cut to size with a bandsaw, edges beveled with a belt sander, and the reeds applied to the edges with a file by hand.

I would normally just call it a fly-by-night, but this company has been around and active for four to six months now.

  • Check out their web site: www.gallerycoins.com

They have a brick-n-mortar operation AND they claim to have graded 25,000 coins thus far. I like the auction linked in numismanic's post: it's a 55-D dime that has a "value" of $1,350, but it is currently at $0.99 with just 2 days to go. Sounds like a rip to me! image

Wow, someone will have to do a few crossovers to see how they do. If they are good there could be some pretty inexpensive coins until they catch up to the big boys.
  • Interesting that they picture their "premium" slab. I haven't seen one of those since the company first appeared several months ago. The first dozen or so pieces I saw were in the "premium" slabs, then the compact slabs appeared and I haven't seen a premium slab since.
  • I think that stand is DEFINITELY worth $1.04...........are those slabs the same size as any of the big 3?
  • The premium is about the same size as an ANACS slab, the compact is roughly the same as an NGC.
