Submitting cards to have variation added to flip

I have some cards that are varieties that were graded before they put the varieties on the flips. I want to submit the cards and have the varieties added. Have any of you done this and what submission level did you use?

I called PSA and I was informed that I needed to use the regular $15 submission level. The cards do not need to be graded, so that just does not seem right, but maybe that is the way it is. I thought I would check with the experiences of others on this board.

Sounds like it ought to be a $5 reholder job. $15 just doesn't seem right to me either.

I thought it was a $5 reholder as well. I think the customer service rep was misinformed- it's happened to me a few times.

  • I've had this done for free (well, I had to pay the shipping to PSA) in the past. I've had numerous cards with errors on the labels (including missing variations, typos, etc.) and sent them in with an invoice marked "Mechanical Errors" and they get corrected. You just need to be specific about what the error is and what the correction should be.

I think this would be different than mechanical errors. '52 Topps, for instance. It has only been recently that PSA labeled the low numbers as red or black backs. You'll probably have to pay to have this done to cards graded pre Jan '05. I'm sure at some point they will have to label T206's with the backs as well, as other grading companies do.

  • I don't have any problem paying to have the flips updated. However, $15 versus $5 for reholdering or $7 for a bulk submission seems quite high. I have about 8 cards I want to send in.

I look at it this way: If the cards were sent in on a bulk 50's submission (50 cards or more), the card would not only have the variety checked and put on the flip, but the card would need to be graded as well. The cost for this is $7 if there is not a special on that month. The cards I am sending in are already graded. They just need the variety checked, a flip made and reholdered. The cost of this is about twice as much and no grading needs to be done.

Maybe I should just send them in as mechanical errors as others have done. It is just that I know they are not mechanical errors and I am just trying to do the right thing. But if doing the right thing costs me $100 that I do not need to spend, it makes you think twice.

Anyone else with any experiences along this line?
