I mean besides the personal sense of accomplishment?

<< <i>Agreed ... PSA provides a free service to all of us, as well as providing free grades once a set hits 75%. >>
Free service? While maybe that's technicaly true, trust me, PSA is making a pretty penny off the registry. They can't afford NOT to offer that free service. PSA should be down on their knees thanking us for buying all those graded commons.
And yes, I agree, it is a service. As soon as I pick my sets, I isgoing all out!

Don't know about that, we buy graded commons because it is our hobby. How should they thank us? Reduce the submission prices every now and then? They do that. Provide an unbelievable method to organize our inventory? They do that too.
SGC is offering money to make money. Nothing wrong with that either.

At some point they are going to have to get people to collect those cards for the sheer pleasure of it. Another honest question is whether or not a straight PSA 8 1963 Topps set would be worth $2000 more than a straight SGC 88 set.
or just best set in a particular category?

It came with my certificates last week, and I thought $2,000 was pretty cool of them.

Man, all I got for having the #1 Mike Ditka Player Set was a box of Levitra!
I am probably way off here, but when you throw in money and/or other monetary incentives, it will only bring out the worst in some in regards to cheating on the registry (using someone else's cert #'s, etc) just to be #1 and receive a cash/monetary-type reward.

I still don't see anywhere close to the activity as the PSA registry? Yup cash is a great prize but unless you have serious money to grade out a 76 Topps set at 7.00 per card(never have any kind of specials) then its not even close to worth it. You have to have a good stash of raw, troll ebay for crossovers that you have to buy then pay more to crossover so in the long run its not worth it in my opinion? I tried but it just gets boring doing it alone. There are 10 collectors here that are actively collecting the set so that means outlet for sales, conversation and trades! Selling on ebay or off ebay is so much easier than trying to push SGC cards that nobody wants to have to crack out and send to PSA. Take a look at the 72,78,75 Topps and 84 Donruss threads! Nobody is collecting these sets at SGC , unless I am missing something?
SGC is a good company that is acurate 99% of the time (TAT could be alot better)but it just gets boring and you lose the desire to do a set by yourself it's just alot easier to keep focus when there are others that are just as passionate about the set your collecting. My 76's are still in tact but if PSA runs a 5.00 special I can't promise that they will stay that way? I think it hurts SGC in the 70's market because 1. There are no 10's in the population 2. They are too small of a company to turn around orders faster 3. The stupid 1 to 100 grading scale with the 1 to 10 underneath it. 4. they need to get rid of the insert and go with a holder that has the black insert permanent. 5.The homemade look to the labels and the non machine cut inserts. If the card doesn't fit use a plastic sleeve like BGS does.
Just my 2 cents and at the end of the day it doesn't matter. There are alot of other things to be worried about but when it comes to a hobby people take it serious and presentation has alot to do with it. Its like paying for a round of golf at one course that is not maintained,a couple of faithful golfers, no carts, but has the best pro shop and cost more then the well kept course one town over where there are plenty of golfers with the same passion, cheaper greens fees and plenty of golf going on but has a decent pro shop with a ton of activity with a great 19th hole with alot of people in it. Where are you golfing?

For what they are offering, i doubt it will affect anyone already entrenced in PSA, crossover it too expensive and like stated above SGC doesn't sell for as much as PSA.

I don't think you are off at all! This is a very valid point and the reason people strive for the #1 set is for sense of accomplishment over all else. Smart of them to offer the registry, but I think a cash prize would bring more cheats into an arena that the grading companies are effectivly cleaning out.
