2006 Football is shaping up to be a big year.

After a somewhat disappointing 2005 rookie card year, 2006 could be a HUGE year. At the top of the class is Reggie Bush. Depending where he ends up, I can see even his low end rookies going for $10-$15. The only downside is that the QB selection is a little light. I'm not sure if Leinart and Vince Young are going to be stars. AJ Hawk is going to attract interest. There are a lot of quality RBs coming out also, which should help get the hobby started since RBs tend to make an immediate impact.

After Reggie, the next most important player is Brady Quinn if he decides to come out. I think he has the best QB pro-potential. But since I'm a Notre Dame fan, I hope Weis convinces him that he needs another year.

I just saw that Vince Young is now broke and jobless like many people people in America. I was totally wrong about 2006 football and I don't think I was alone.

2005 turned out to be better than expected with Rodgers rise and Alex Smith's comeback. Heck, even Frank Gore cards sell well on ebay.

I was right about the 2006 QBs, but horribly wrong on Quinn. I still think he may get a shot in KC, especially if Cassel keeps throwing 5 yard passes.

Vince Young has run out of money
    By Brian McIntyre

(AP)On July 30, 2006, Vince Young, the No. 3 overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft, signed a six-year contract with the Tennessee Titans that was worth just over $48 million, had a maximum value of $57.79 million, and contained $25.74 million in guaranteed money.

Just over six years later, Young is not on the NFL radar screen and has run out of money, the Associated Press reports.

Young earned over $30 million of his rookie contract and banked another $4 million last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Young signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Buffalo Bills in May, but that deal included just $350,000 in guaranteed money and the former University of Texas standout was released in favor of Tyler Thigpen and Tarvaris Jackson in August.

Young's financial mess has been well-documented. In June, Young filed a lawsuit against his former agent, Major Adams II, and financial adviser, Ronnie T. Peoples of Peoples Financial Service. In the suit, Young claims that at least $5.5 million of his money was misappropriated by Peoples Financial Service. The suit came on the heels of Young defaulting on a $1.9 million loan obtained in Young's name with Pro Player Funding LLC, who have received a $1.69 million judgment against the former Heisman Trophy finalist.

According to Trey Dolezal, Young's attorney, the loan with Pro Player Funding was obtained by Adams and Peoples, who Young has accused of falsifying documents, forging his signature and impersonating him for their own financial gain.

"They conspired to take Vince's money," Dolezal told the Associated Press. "It's that simple."

What's not so simple is Young's path back to the NFL. His opportunity with the Bills may have been his last shot for a steady NFL paycheck. Bills head coach Chan Gailey is a creative offensive mind who could have used a player with Young's mobility, but a 48.1 percent completion percentage and a pair of interceptions in the preseason helped seal his fate with the club. Another factor was Thigpen's willingness to take a $1 million pay cut to remain with the team, a move that Young, who was due $1.25 million in salary, a $300,000 roster bonus in the opening week of the season and $6,250 for each game he was active ($100,000 total).

[Outside the Game: Lamarr Woodley gives back to his hometown]

Dolezal believes that Young's financial situation may have been a factor in the Bills' decision to release the quarterback.

"I wasn't in the room when they (the Bills) made a decision, but what would you think? It certainly wouldn't help me if I'm the owner or the head coach knowing all this is going on with Vince and then he goes out and plays poorly," Dolezal said.

A possibility for Young could be the CFL. After his release from Buffalo, Young was added to the Montreal Alouette's "negotiation list", which would give them exclusive negotiating rights. The Als currently have the ageless Anthony Calvillo, Adrian McPherson and Josh Neiswander on their quarterback depth chart. Another possibility is the United Football League, which is attempting to restart in a few weeks and has a contract with the CBS Sports Network.

OK ... I understand that he may have had $5,500,000.00 stolen from him and that SUCKS BIG TIME. But he made $34,000.000.00. I understand you have to pay taxes on that money ... but how the hell do you go BROKE? Man, maybe the NFL and the Players Association should add some language in their next Collective Bargaining Agreement that puts 10% of a players salary from their first 5 years into some sort of Deferred Payment Account that gets paid to the player when they reach age 40. Do something to protect these kids who cannot protect themselves.

  • This is kind of a neat thread, being that I am fairly new here. Seeing a thread made in 2005, and now the OP is loooking back at his predictions 7 years later!

If President Obama would have given stimulus checks to NFL rookies, than America would be ruled today by strip joints & jewelry stores!

But on a more serious note, no matter who is to blame, it's a shame & a very sad story!
  • That was still the greatest game I've ever seen, USC vs Texas.......Vince Young cemented himself in college football history. Unfortunately, that's where it ends.

I think Beckett did a story a few months ago about the 2006 Draft and how much of a bust it was. The card manufacturers also thought 2006 would be a huge year and cranked up the presses. If you were a football card fan at that time, you were saving your allowance to buy 2006 boxes. Reggie Bush was probably the most hyped rookie since Peyton Manning in 1998, 3 top QBs, and a deep running back class. Seven years later and the best player left is Maurice Jones-Drew (pick #60). The best highest drafted player is Vernon Davis (#6), but I don't see too many hobbyists chasing TEs.

Some may call it a bust, but just because all the top picks had a slow start, still struggling, or are out of it all together. Some of the people that invested deeper in the draft, may not be hurt as much as some of the others. Greg Jennings was part of that class as well. It just goes to show you, DONT BUY INTO THE DRAFT HYPE!
