63 Topps FB set value

Gentlemen, new to the boards as a poster, but not a day goes by I don't read these boards. I have alot of respect for opinions here, this is the heart of the hobby. With 2 kids in college and 1 in private HS, it's time to part with my registery set. I have the #3 1963 FB set, under "Bobby D's 63's". I would like to solicit offers from board memebers first. You can email me. If you aren't interested in buying the set, I would still like you opinion on two topic's - the sets value, and other than listing it here, the best process for selling it.     With the amount of new blood chasing that set I would definetly break it up.

    Start by listing all 9-10's as seperate auctions and move those.

    Then list all of the good 8's (HOFers, Rookies)

    Then maybe some team set groupings.

    Finally a single auction to move whats left.

    Breaking up the set is what I would recommend, as well.
    I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

    Yes, it's an early and enduring love, started back in the early 70's with the book.

    Breaking it up would be best. Lots of interest in those cards. Also, it is my personal favorite from the 60s. Love the colors, some of those cards are very rare. Knowing what you have into a lot of those cards, you would probably stand to make a very nice profit in auction.

    I would break it up and also turn on PMs so that interested board members could contact you about singles.

    Just a point, I would imagine low pop cards would sell well in excess of smr, REMEMBER SMR IS A GUIDE...GUIDE being the optimal word!!!

    Hey Bob - sorry to see you moving on.
    You and I have both been working on this set for some time now.

    SMR doesn't list a value for that entire set, you have to add up all the individual card values yourself,
    but the heck with SMR on this, realistically I'd be thinking in terms of about 20 k as a market value for your set.

    Been great dealing with you, good luck in your future ventures,
    and don't let SKINSFAN steal that # 169 Redskins team photo in PSA 8 off you. I'll pay you much more for it than he will ... image

    Wolfbear, glad you commented, always alot of respect for your opinion. I think I'll probably start over and build the set in straight 7, I have about half of a second set in 7 as a result of upgrading over the years. As to the value, I recall the 3rd or 4th 62 set selling for over that amount about 18 months ago but I cannot find the auction, the overall set grade was around 7.5 - 7.6 maybe someone here recalls the auction. Anyway, I had a value of about $16,000 in my head when I started this process and you confirm that to be in the ballpark. Unless you've been collecting the set all along you really can't appreciate how difficult this set is to build above 8.0. I think after the first of the year I'll put this on ebay with an 18k reserve and see what happens, perhaps then onto an auction house if I can't find someone iterested between now and then.
    Meanwhile, if anyone thinks we are nut's with our assesment of value - they can chime in.

    BOB best of luck to you either way but i think you will get much more if you break it up as anyone who has tried this set knows the low pops are murder and will bring large $ on there own and sometimes get lost when selling as a whole set.

    Another option is you really want to sell as a set to get it over with a 1 time is to maybe replace some of the real tough cards with sevens when you sell the set and then sell the hard cards on there own.

    And dont listen to wolfbear he is just mad i beat him in fantasy football lol.

    I have a bunch of extra sevens myself if you need some,best of luck and happy holidays

    I did a SMR value of the entire set and it was about 9K. I know SMR is just a guide, but that was value. It does seems low for this set.

    jayhawke - thanks for doing the math.

    Just for a point of reference, in the May 2005 Mile High auction, the # 2 1962 Fleer football set on the registry sold for 3 times SMR.
