anyone crack open any 86 topps baseball and get good results ? Ive been sitting on 4 unopened vending cases for yrs now, and with all the pops so low ( I figure either lack of interest, or those black borders) maybe it might be worth opening.....

I've submitted quite a few of these from a rack case. It is pretty tough to get 10s but when you do, they sell pretty well. If you do bust them, I would be interested in some common Angels cards that I still need (3 of them I believe).

I busted about 3 wax boxes a few years ago. Really rough set. Maybe it was just my boxs, but all the cards seemed to be rough cut to the point where the edges were chipping and looking gnarled. I'd venture to say that there wasn't a single card in the whole group of 3 boxes that would have gotten any higher than a PSA 8.

I had heard that some of the best 86 topps can be had in those x-mas factory boxes.....i wouldnt know, i cracked mine open when i was 13 !

I opened 4 rack boxes about a year ago for grading. I got about 4 or 5 PSA 10's from the 4000+ cards I opened. They are really tough. All the 10's (except for 1) were commons that barely got grading fees. The 9's I took a bath on. One 10 I got was a #4 Pete Rose Special card that sold for about $40. The payoff for stars in 10's is pretty good though from what I see on Ebay. Collector's really respect the difficulty of these in PSA 10 and they pay for it. I'll probably try it again someday. It was fun, just time consuming.

I've tried with these cards twice now, and I've had zero luck finding gradable specimens. I'm still sitting on 2+ rack boxes that I just cannot muster the energy to open, since I know the best cards in there would likely grade a 7.

I opened a vending case and a rack box, sent in about 8 cards, and ended up with 10's of puckett, mattingly, and schmidt and 9's from other star players. I didn't submit any commons (although some would say they're all commons, lol). They're a little tough, but it's doable.

The key is finding the right cases. I don't know whether it's exposure to moisture, but most of the cards are limp and have corner and edge wear. Then you find usually one or two boxes in a 6 box rack case where the stock feels much more firm. The stock is more like the traded stock. Those are the ones you want to open because you have a real chance for 10s in there. If you have the bad boxes you would be lucky to find 7s.

i busted a 6 box rack case about 18 months ago...puckett, ozzie, schmidt and sandbergs were ALL OC. boggs and brett had nicks on most all of them (top center). could this be where they were located on the sheet? had good luck with most of the ones i submitted (9s and 10s).

I recently bought a 6 box rack case, submitted 100 cards from it and the grades just popped today! I've submitted a bunch of these in the past and I strongly feel that rack cases are the way to go. I opened a vending case and factory set a while ago and was very disappointed with the results. As an example, a whole vending case yielded me just one ten while this last rack case gave me 17 tens. I didn't even submit any cards from the factory set because none were worthy, in my opinion. Anyway, I'll paste my results below. I'll be listing any duplicates and ones that I don't need for my set soon, but I'll probably wait until right after the holidays.

I busted a vending case and was so frustrated I bought a rack case. The rack case was nicer and I found about 20-30 I think that have a chance at a 10 so that would probably mean getting 2-3 10s

I have been waiting to send them in but keep having other stuff that keeps the 86's at the bottom of the pile. I also have 30,000 cards I don't know what to do with.

Not to sound bad on my part, I am not a fan of 86s by any means, never liked the design much. But after looking at ajetfan's set on the registry, I had to say that looking at them in a PSA holder makes them look better.

I would have to agree with some of the guys here who say the 1986 product is pretty tough. Forget vending from what I've experienced. Wax is even worse. Racks are the best way to go it seems. I have broken over the past two years 45 rack boxes ( 5 six-boxes & 5 3-boxes), 1 vending case, and a wax case. I have aslo bought numerous sets (factory & otherwise). My set is not even close to complete. I'm at a little better than 60% in screaming MINT condition with the balance ranging between NM and "if only's". Now, my standards are sometimes a touch higher than PSA's, for example, but with that said, 1986 is tough. Gorgeous...absolutely gorgeous cards when they are high-end with a tiffany-like finish and crispy-fresh, downright gross when they are mushy and bland. These are a few of my favorite 86's from my set (most of my set is raw and will remain so). The thing I love about these examples is the texture and the deep, rich, color. The 86's I seek are glow-in-the-dark-like when held at arm's length. Also...LOTS of issues with extra stock on this year.

These '86 Topps cards bring back SO many memories! This was when the hobby was exploding and product was being pushed out into the market like crazy. This set was always special in my eyes and it's SUPER tough to get in gem condition. But, I think that with no real 'prize' cards to find, it just doesn't do much for me. I love the look of most cards in the set, but just doesn't want to make me collect the entire set graded. Plus, this set has to be put together for the love of it because I don't know how much resale value it might have in the future.

In any case, I wanted to comment on DGF's Strawberry in PSA 9....umm...how is that not a 10? Those Coleman and Dykstra cards used to be hot ones for sure! Gotta love that time in the hobby, don't you?

I can remember my thoughts when i opened the first pack back in 86......always reminded me of the 64 topps somewhat, but with the black borders as well. Think I am going to crack open a few boxes of em over the holidays......those psa 10's that were posted looked great.......if anyone has an 86 mattingly in psa 10 I would be interested....

I never had any luck with these cards. After 4 rack cases i have still to get my first 10. I remember when the Pete Rose #1 would bring $40, now your lucky if you can get $10 for it. Maybe some day I will pull the 1st Ryan 10 and recoup my money.

I learned quite a bit about shopping for product from Matt Morse (Gator05) when he was pioneering graded 81 Topps Baseball. It's hit or miss, but you can limit your downside some and learn from your mistakes. Of course, that applies more when you do a product longer-term like he did. If you want to give it another go try a small sampling like a 3-box or just a rack box from a case-break from a dealer you know (Steve Hart, for instance). If you dig 'em, buy more.

I remember seeing auctions for sealed cases from major submitters over the years and wondering why they didn't bust the case themselves since that's what they normally do. Basically, I wondered if they had some way of knowing it wouldn't be a good break.

If there are even patterns just from the numbers on the case, then that's pretty scary. I always thought sealed cases were safe...or at least as safe as any unopened product can be.

I've cracked open a lot of 86 cases and I haven't been able to figure anything out from the box numbers. I have found that you have to inspect the boxes very carefully to check for any evidence of moisture.

I just started a 6 box rack case this past weekend and so far a lot of pretty cards. If the first box and a half are any indication it will be my best case to date.

I also just picked up the following new cases:

1981 Topps vending
1986 Topps 3 box rack
1988 Topps 6 box rack

That should be enough to keep me busy for a while.

Well. . .I had a 6-box rack case sitting around and went through three boxes. Figured I'd do a 35-card order with some of the better examples. Grades popped today. All I can do is shake my head - the guy just wouldn't give up any 10s. Anyway. . .

Started 3 rack boxes today. All 3 boxes are from different purchases, from different sellers. The first box was the typical ebay purchase, a box that obviously changed hands 47 times through the mail since 1986........not one card even worth consideration for submission. Plenty of nicely centered cards, with great color, but almost every card had a slightly touched or dinged corner.

Second rack box yielded a real nice Clemens, Mattingly, and Ripken out of the first pack......scans and results of the rest of the box to follow........

Here are some scans from the second rack box.......it produced some really nice cards. Vivid color and gloss on most, many with a deep, wet look. Overall the centering was amazing, very little chipping. Truly a fun time opening this one !

The problem is you send in a batch where you know there are some 10s. . .and you get a grader with his finger stuck on the 9 button - like the order above. I mean the guy just wouldn't give up the 10. Makes me wonder what it would take for that grader. It's frustrating sometimes when you get a grader who isn't very familiar with a given issue. . .or has inordinately tough standards. . .or both.

Nice Clark....seems like the update are even more sensitive to chipping.....I have around 10 or 12 86 traded sets I have never opened....might be a project to tackle this week !

I will be opening another 86 rack box today, hopefully there will be some more tasty looking cards like that last box produced.

Ok.....thought I would try to bump the thread........been busting 86's like a man possessed lately......2 6 box rack cases almost done and the more I get through the more I love this set. If you hit a box just right they are amazing. I managed to put together around 200 or so cards that are truly gem mint. I have assembled them with the utmost scrutiny, allowing zero print defects, and this includes spotting on the team name colors, as well as not accepting any black that does not have a tiffany like finish. There are so many cards with no chipping, perfect centering, but a dull black or grey finish that just wont make the grade for my set. This, so far, is an all out masterpiece at work. I cannot say how much fun it is to put together a truly perfect raw set, not to mention the amazing eye appeal. Sure, no big rookies in the set, but the price is great, and the visual brilliance of a perfect 86 more than makes up for the lack of a high end rookie or two. Feel free to jump on the 86 black bandwagon, there is plenty to go round for all !!

So true. My vending case produced surprisingly little to choose from. Between centering issues and corner/edge issues, a good ten is hard to find. This is a fun set to pursue but the 10's are a real problem to find. I would really love to finish this one in anything above 9 overall. Pretty sad for a modern set.

Not to give you seller remorse, but you should have opened the other 2. From what I've seen, rack boxes are either a bad or loaded with gold. From my experience, 1 box in the case might have hardly nothing gradable and then the next box seems to have sharp cards one right after another. My best guess on that theory is maybe you are catching a box right after the blades are replaced? I'm just guessing though.

I agree....should have opened the other 2. I have had cases where one box is pathetic then 2 straight with gems. Rack always does well for me. On the other hand, I have gotten vending cases where there was not one single card that would grade above a 7. I havnt tried any wax, and frankly have given up on wax completely for any year, they just dont hold well over the years IMO.

I agree with Brian. I had bought 2 rack boxes from BBC. Lucky for me the first was the better of the 2. I might have sold it off if I opened the second one first.
