Has anyone ever been deadset on a series or in the middle of putting together a set...

...and you have little voices in the back of your head nudging you to buy another coin of another series? Well, this has been going on with me for about 2 years now...and these little voices are telling me to pony up and buy that Franklin Half Dollar that I have always wanted! image Ever since I was younger I have always been intrigued by the Franklin Half Dollar...not sure why...but I just really like the design!

Question is: Should I go ahead and buy 1 nice WHITE PCGS Frankie in 64/65 to satisfy my thirst OR should I just stay the course and finish what I started in Lincolns OR fire up a Franklin set too? ARRRGGGHHHH. There are so many cool coins out there...why do I have to stick to just one series?

Does anyone know what kind of money I would be looking at to build a nice Franklin HD set in 64/65? Not necessarily FBL's...but that would be nice!

I would love to hear from some Franklin collectors out there...maybe what the real challenges are in the series, etc. Feel free to PM as well.

Thanks in advance...

Toby

  • A nice ms64/ms65 raw Franklin set is very affordable ($500-$800 maybe) but very challanging. I was within 4 coins of such a set but I sold them all (got a few fbl ones slabbed). Now I really want to put together a pcgs ms66 set. Have the 60-p but probably am going to sell it. Still not ready to go all out on this set. Gosh I really love Franklins though! I guess I just love all coins!

Collect what you like but you might end up like me and collect just about everything.

I started a high grade Franklin set in 1977 but in those days it was really tough to find
the coins needed since there were no grading services, no internet, and few people in-
terested in "junk" like Franklins. I got a good start after lots of hard work and gave up.

I am right there with you. I have veered several times. Once you buy that one coin then you get another and another and another. What I have just decided to do was stick with my main set which is 20th century gold and then splurge every now and then on a US type set. This way I only have to get one of the coin that interests me at the moment. I plan on getting my first toned Frankie slabbed MS66 FBL tomorrow.

Nice thing about this method is you can get a real nice example on a common date and don't have to worry about the huge prices on the rare dates.

That happens to me all the time. If I'm unable to locate the coins I need for one set, I get my coin buying fix by buying coins in other series. Other times, I just like to add a little variety. I'm like Cladking in that respect - I collect just about everything, and unless I win the lottery, I'll never be able to finish all the sets I have started.

You can stick with one series and upgrade until you can no longer afford it, and possibly end up with a world-class series with the same repetitive design, or diversify and - as David Hall would say - " Have fun with your coins."

  • Yep, It has led me to a type set. I have coin related OCD and I enjoy them all. I found a type set helps to satisfy the need for other series and still allows me to focus on the main series. The coppers have alot of pressure on them right now, so the type set allows me to pic up other coins which are cool to have but I don't want to collect a hundred of them. Then again.....

Ellwood! Did'nt we just have a "what to collect" discussion a few weeks back???

Look, you hava e great 34 to date Lincoln set. I think you can pick up a few Franks while waiting for those Lincolns to come along...Go for It!

  • Toby,
Obviously, your favorite series is Lincolns as is mine. But I too have considered collecting another series
only to stop myself and stick to Lincolns. And this other series would be Frankies, just like you. I think I'm
so devoted to Lincolns I shutter at the thought of devoting time to another coin. This attitude doesn't
really make sense but I still do not own any slabbed Frankies. It makes more sense to follow our thoughts
of Frankies but something holds me back. image Water Sport says go for it and so do I. But not me! image

  • Oh Toby,
BTW, when you say finish what you started, are you referring to the 1909-present Lincoln set? Are you
going to complete that set this year or next?

OK guys, look, I know your pain. I need 18 coins to complete what I want before 2009. Not to finish what PCGS wants, what I want! I think I can make it; Then again, Matte proofs have never done much for me. But Water Sports financial situation has changed along with maybe (hopefully) a state side move in or around February (wish me luck) I started a raw vg-fine three cent nickel collection in October because I had a cool 3 cent Capital board. I have only 5 coins, and have sought no more. I guess it’s on hold?
Next, I have about 1/3 of a Morgan collection (I know you can't believe it and your in shock that Water Sport even HAS such a coin let alone 1/3 of the series). Reality is, I do not want to go that deep to finish a series (or not finish) so Gonfunko suggest just doing a date set. Great idea! I will get around to it sometime. Lastly, have you seen that 1793-date set series? UFB! I again can not see me doing a date set of Indians and Large cents, but you know, between Gonfunko and I, we got it raw to 1810. Problem is, cost to slab, and PCGS not willing to slab corrosion will make this a hard set to do. And your point is? Try another series/set! It may work for you, it may not. But you will not know until you try. Odds are, you will always favorite Lincolns and keep falling back to them. It’s not like your going to abandon them.

I buy a few coins here and there of odds and ends but will not do anything serious until I finish my registry set of wheats, if I veer off course my resources will not allow me to collect a top set. Then it will probably be Indians! Good luck my friend! Mark

Yes, we did have that discussion about selling my proof lincolns..which I am VERY glad I did not do (actually, I am in the midst of updating my 1961 to a SWEET CAM that I located recently. It won't get me any more registry points...but it's a much nicer looking coin that the coin I have in my set now).

Ok, so I keep battling in my own head. Should I branch out and grab a nice WHITE Frankie...or should I stay the course and finish what I started? I'm going to concentrate on my 34-58 for now. Ok. I said it. Staying the course with Lincolns.

To answer your question about the 09-58 set...oh...it's going to take me more than a couple of years to complete that one. That is a "lifetimer" for me...at least in the grades that I would be satisfied with!

P.S. Am I cheating if I ask my wife to put a PCGS MS66 Franklin in my stocking?

I asked my wife for 55/55 for Christmas but I am not holding my breath.

  • Mark,
Nice set, especially for only working at it for 3 months. Appears to be a monster or two in there. We'd
all love to see some images.

    Toby,
Now I know why you're selling that proof coin! Going cameo, huh? How can I catch you if you keep
    acquiring nicer coins?

    WS,
Good luck on your possible move in Feb. Geez, if you do that, I won't have a contact on the Island.

  • When this happens to me I buy one super high-end example-- then when another one comes up I'm not tempted to buy it too since the other usually isn't as nice. Of coarse "WHITE" coins are not as prized among silver collectors (we want undipped) as "RED" cents are to copper collectors, but that's a different question...image
