Which Large Cent should I get for my 12 year old Nephew for Christmas?
First, I don't really know anything about large cents. In a previous post, I asked for suggestions on what to get my 12 year old nephew as a gift, because he is the only one of my 11 neices and nephews who has an interest in coins. There were two suggestions-- a large cent or a classic commemorative (unfortunately I don't know anything about commemoratives either). As for large cents, I found these three. Admittedly, they are not the most expensive coins I could find, or the rarest. But with 11 neices and nephews, the family decided to put a dollar limit on things. Does anyone have any opinions on these coins, or better yet, can you suggest where I might find others? If you are into commemoratives, please feel free to suggest some of those as well. I will probably also get him the QDB Type Coins book. Lastly, I hope I don't get a bad rap for being a boring uncle and buying coins and books for Christmas.

Complete Dime Set
Of the three you post, I like the 1852 the best.

Will you be my uncle?
The former 12 year large cent collector would have been quite happy with the 1826. I was then fascinated with age of the coin and overall mintage. The 1826 would win on both of these accounts.

<< <i>Wow, quite a difference in price...$19, $55, and $105. I wrongly assumed that the prices were similar. Naturally, we all chose the most expensive coin--it is clearly the nicest. >>
I think it was more of a function of having just looked at the JJ. Teaparty website, and those were the only ones listed, within reason.

If forced, I'd take #1...Mike
you would be better to get an 1849 large cent with that 1849 sexy gold minee 49er date
historical and sexy and understandable/likeable for a 12 year old
(Just think of city streets clogged with a hundred thousand horses each generating 15 lbs of manure every day...)
sopunds good to me
should be easy to find all this if the kid googles it
<< <i>yes good suggestion buy an 18490 large cent and tell him he can have it if he finds out waht makes the date 1849 so special in the history of the usa and also an important date in usa federal coin history 1849 due to the gold miners and all the golc coming out of calif gold fields and the insueing territorial gold coins and the starting of the twenty dollar gold pieces in 1849 1850!!

<< <i>I would go for the 1852 strictly for the details. I know my 12 year old son appreciate coins more for look than rarity (at this point anyway).
