1682 taler from Salzburg (warning: big pics)

This is why I love the darkside - take a look at the detail on this on this taler. It is from Salzburg in Austria in 1682, and was a 1 year type commemorating the 1100 Year of the Bishopric. The first image is a picture from the dealer. The 2nd is from my scanner since my camera is frustrating the daylights out of me right now.

Sorry for the big pics.

    That is a sharp coin!

Be nice to see what kind of pictures you can get with your camera instead of your scanner.

  • What a wonderful example of the Baroque style in coinage.

    This is a real treasure.

PS: What was the technique used to mint this coin?

17th century Austrian coins caught my eye too... no world collection is complete without some. Very nice example.

    Thanks fo the nice words!

1jester - I am sadly ignorant in the history of coin minting, but it is an area which is intriguing me more and more. My next purchase is a coin minting book that I saw at my local coin shop. It looks like a great book covering the history of coin production, with deep detail into the techniques. I can't recall the name of it off the top of my head, so I will have to make that a future post on the forum.

Most of those are made with roller dies.

Very nice coin, I've had one of that type on my list for a while but haven't come across one in the "buy" area of the nice vs. cheap curve.
