Complete 1954 Topps Baseball Set (100% PSA graded) - Ends Tonight!

Hello all:

Am planning on listing the following on EBay tonight. Meant to post it on these boards a little earlier, but quite busy with the holidays. If interested give me shout - real nice set. Would be #25 on the registry today (never had time to key it in either).

As you know, you can register both team and complete sets to get some free grading.

Anyway - here is the text I will likely use, with scans of the listed cards:

Complete 1954 Topps Set – 100% PSA Graded

All 250 cards PSA graded – SMR is $8,569

Absolutely beautiful, complete, 100% PSA graded 1954 Topps set – one of the most popular sets ever made. This set has been built with an eye on the HOF and star cards – which are very nice. From the PSA 6 Aaron RC, which borders on a 7, to the sharp PSA 6 Kaline RC, the very nice PSA 5 Banks RC, to the PSA 6 Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson cards, to the pair of nice (actually very nice) Psa 5 Ted Williams cards, to the PSA 7 Lasorda RC this set is clean, bright, and displays well.

This set will be packed professionally and shipped in the fine oak case as shown below (which cost me $80).

If this set were input into the PSA Registry it would score out at 5.51. As you will see below the stars are very attractive cards. The Aaron Rookie, which has been appreciating steadily, woluld have the following subgrades (in my humble opinion) centering – 7, corners - 6.5, edges – 6, surface - 7.5.

Here are the key cards:

#1 Ted Williams PSA 5 Ex (Touch to top right corner kept it from a 6 – nice)
#7 Ted Kluzewski PSA 7 NM (NM/MT in every way except s/s centering)
#10 Jackie Robinson PSA 6 Ex/Mt (Perfectly centered w/ slight corner touches)
#17 Phil Rizzuto PSA 6 Ex/Mt (Fairly graded, great surface)
#20 Warren Spahn PSA 5 Ex (Centering keeps this from being a NM card)
#30 Ed Matthews PSA 6 Ex/Mt (Bright & well focused 6)
#32 Duke Snider PSA 6 Ex/Mt ( Super clean 6, a definite “6.5”-type card)
#37 Whitey Ford PSA 4 Vg/Ex (Lowest graded key card – presents well though)
#45 Richie Ashburn PSA 6 Ex/Mt (Touches to both right corners)
#50 Yogi Berra PSA 5 Ex (Fairly graded, dynamite surface with soft corners)
#90 Willie Mays PSA 6 Ex/Mt (Meets the technical criteria for a 6, fair grade)
#94 Ernie Banks RC PSA 5 Ex (Only card I feel is undergraded, nicer than many 6’s)
#102 Gil Hodges PSA 6 Ex/Mt (Very light, honest wear – very nice surface)
#128 Hank Aaron RC PSA 6 Ex/Mt (Chipping of one edge (on back) or else NM 7)
#132 Tommy Lasorda RC PSA 7 NM (Glossy and perfectly focused)
#201 Al Kaline RC PSA 6 Ex/Mt (Roller mark on Rt. Side, otherwise PSA 8 Nm/Mt)
#250 Ted Williams PSA 5 Ex (Rough cut & centering outweigh exc. clarity & focus)

Insured Shipping and Packaging will be $75 (overnight can be arranged, if necessary, for Christmas); payment is due within 7 days of auction close. I have detailed scans and a complete excel spreadsheet listing available – drop me a line if you need more detail on this important set.

Let me know if interested, or if you've got any suggestions to pump up the auction text. Thanks in advance.

Also got a bunch of other stuff (1953 Bowman Color PSA's, some extra 1954's, some partial sets, etc. going up tonight)

This is one of those key sets that is beautiful and very tough to put together. I'd love to pick it up if I had the extra scratch. Unfortunately, I don't at this time image

Good luck with the sale! I wish you were breaking it up, as I would bid on that Aaron

I wish you luck with the set but I think breaking this up is the way to go. Just don't see that much demand by set collectors in the 50s for an ex-plus set. Likely buyers could be dealers who would hope to catch a bargain at a discount to smr.

    But, I could be wrong.

Thanks for the kind words. Hoping the set will go as a Christmas gift. Very reasonable reserve.

Got a few more pictures to add.

DG - I see you are high bidder; I'd be glad to see it go to someone on the boards (Like my complete 1962 Topps Registry set did).

  • Whoa, my reign at the top didn't last long.
  • Back on top, though probably not for long. I think this set is going to do really well for you.

Anyways, this should be fun. See you again in 6 days, 21 hours...

I never understood why guys bid early and often. I can see the early bid, but a pissing match on day one ? DG, good luck, hope you win! Is a great set.

At least 5 of the bidders are on the boards. Probably just trying to help another board member out.

I put my bid in to remember this auction. It's a great set and I'm trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to try and build it via submissions or just lay out the big check.

Mike, great set, I'm sorry you have to sell it (hopefully you're going to buy something you want more).

I have my eye on your '53 Bowmans, but don't tell anyone.

    Good luck!

I'll keep it under my hat!

Nice 1972 partial set up on ebay now too - with some PSA cards including Fisk & Reggie Jackson in 8 NM/MT.

I've got a 1970 Topps set with a bunch of PSA 7's (Ryan, Rose, Clemente, etc.) going up soon too (got to get the Munson graded first!). In a nice Roop binder too.

    Hello all:

Added some pertinent information and a new photo to the listing tonight - thought it worth mentioning here. Am very pleased with the early bidding and the amount of both hits and watchers.

Made me wonder - does anyone know if setting a snipe counts as a "watcher"? I wouldn't think ebay would have knowledge of potential snipes, but I do know that the some of the snipe services show current bidding and wondered if there may be a connection.

Finally, here's the link again - thanks for your interest and support.

  • I don't think a snipe with a snipe service counts as a "watch". A "watch" only counts when the user clicks on it on ebay. It's possible the guy who sets a snipe also is "watching" the auction on ebay though.

    Good luck with your set.
  • on a related note - how much do you guys think the PSA 6 Aaron and the PSA 6 Mays would go for? I have (or will have) both of these cards in higher grade, and if I happen to win this set, I'd sell off the 6s...so I'm just tyring to figure out what the set will actually cost me once I sell those cards off.

I went down this road a couple years ago with the 1954 set. When I sold, I had a 6.12 at 100% complete and was #10 on the registry. All cards were PSA 6-8. Other sets below me had a higher GPA, but didn't have enough cards in their sets to have a higher set rating. I had an $8000 reserve on E-Bay, and the best I could get was $7100. I think the SMR was similar to BoSox's, but this was before the SMR jump, and commons were listed at $15.

When I went the breakup route, I came out a tad above $11,000. I think it is tough to sell a set like this whole. Usually, collectors that can write those kinds of checks, are the one's building PSA 8+ sets, and the collectors like me who are building sets in this grade are doing it, because we can't write that size check. Obviously there are exceptions, but I think this is the more likely scenario.

Good luck on the sale. Hopefully, things have changed in the '54 world.

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.

77% of SMR is pretty good.

Am happy with the final price, as I know it is tough to get SMR on 5's and 6's (to a lesser extent). Thought I'd get SMR or maybe a little more for the 7's. Notwithstanding the earlier post wherein another board member got 20% over SMR by breaking up his 1954 set averaging around 6-ish, I felt breaking it up would yield 70-80% of SMR, so selling it complete was a more enjoyable way to go.

Now, a set full of 7's & 8's would have been another story. I did get a little over SMR when I sold my complete 1962 Topps Registry set, which was mainly 7's with some 8's including Mantle - but there were only a few low pop 8's so I didn't go that route.

Was the final price close to your BIN? Natetrook is a board member and likes to break sets up and resell. We might see this set recycled in the near future.
