Cool 1970s Hockey Pix From My Closet

I was going through some old hockey photos (mostly discards) from a collection I bought from a newspaper photographer back in the 1970s, when I came across this little gem. Obviously these guys hadn't seen each other in a long time...

For the record, it's Ross Lonsberry of the Philadelphia Flyers and Carol Vadnais of the California Golden Seals 2/9/1972

Found a few more interesting ones - here's the great Bobby Orr obviously displeased with penalty call. In case it doesn't show in the photo, he's clearly about to utter one of the seven words you can't say on television.

As this was the 1970s check out these sideburns:

And, hard as it is to believe, some goalies - even as late as 1973 did not wear facial protection. The bottom one is Hall of Famer Gump Worsley in maybe his last season. I have to believe he's thinnking "I can't believe I just gave up a goal to the friggin Seals!

  • Great pics Moose.

Didnt the entire Seals team experiment with the white skates like Vadnais? Maybe yellow & green too if I remember correctly.

Nice Orr shot. Rarely captured nastier side of the greatest ever.

PM me if they're for sale.

    Thanks, Bob C.

Your recollection is right on the money...during the 1972-74 seasons when Charlie Finley owned the team, they wore green and gold skates, I think for one season, but after Finley found out how much the custom paint jobs were costing he decided to go white. After the NHL bought the team in 1974, they changed colors and kept the white skates, most of which were just black skates with a white spray paint job.

Not interested in selling at this time, for some reason I have a hard time parting with my Seals stuff. It's a sickness.

They were a really, really bad hockey team, but a couple of times they managed to beat the Bruins and Flyers when those teams were the best in the league, and for us fans (especially us kids) it was as good as winning the Stanley Cup!

And yes, ORR was the GREAT ONE!
  • Moose I have to confess. The Seals were my favorite expansion team. image Shhhhhh!

Drop me a line anytime you want to talk 70's hockey.

    Thanks, Bob C.
