Auction price for 1968 and 1978 set?

I just read in the new Dec 23rd SCD that arrived in my mailbox today that a 1968 topps set with all psa 8 and 9's went for $9,850-I cant find my issue (think I left it at work) from last week, but I could have sworn that the issue before the one I received today, I read that a 1978 topps set all psa 8 and 9's went for $17,000 -I was shocked by that !-Shouldnt a 1968 set sell for a lot more then a 1978 set ? I have a factory set from 1978-just curious what do you think the break down of a untouched factory set would be? (30% psa 6, 50% psa 7, 20% psa8, 10%psa9)- Scott

I am a AVID collector of the 78 set and I am absolutley shocked at that price. As a matter of fact, I don't believe it. The number 5 1978 Topps registry set is up for auction on Mastro and it is ending today. Last I looked the price was at 4,500 or so. That set has 63 PSA 10's a handful of 8's and ALL THE REST are PSA 9's.

I have never heard of or ever seen a "factory" set from this time period either.

I made a mistake calling it a factory set-it was a hand collated set that went right into a long white card box and never touched. The cards are pack fresh.I did find the scd 12/16/05 page 34-it has the 78 set listed as $16,116.

The 78 set on mastro went for $4,189. It is my opinion that putting a complete graded late 70's set on Mastro was a mistake. Regardless, it went for peanuts.

  • It could have simply been a miss-print? Perhaps the 1978 price was really the 1968 price and vise-versa? I highly doubt a 1968 Topps Set that was PSA 8 and PSA 9 would sell that low! Unless it was mainly all PSA 8 and even then the PSA 8 Ryan goes for $700 easy and has a SMR of $950. Would be a great deal either way.
  • Here's the 68 set that went for under 10k.

    68 set

While the set did have a few 9's in it, it also had a 7 on what I consider the toughest card in the set. Add to that, in my opinion, several key cards were borderline on centering (Ryan, Superstars, Manager's Dream). Even so, I was a little suprised at the price.

The '68 set did sell for less than one would expect. I agree with the prior post; the many of the key cards have 60/40 or worse centering and that hurts it a lot - especially for dealers who buy sets for break-up purposes.

It appears the the seller of that '68 set was stiffed by the buyer (and given a negative). I just noticed it's up for sale again.

    Quitcrab:

For what it is worth - the 1968 set tends to be one of the easiest sets to complete in PSA 8 condition or better. A quick check of the population report indicates that there are ~41,000 PSA 8s graded from the set, nearly 22,000 PSA 9s and over 2,000 PSA 10s. A straight PSA 8 set from 1968, thus [or one that is primarily PSA 8] will just not tend to realize any huge price premiums - because of the vending finds that have contributed to the high populations....

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
